Be a Suave Singer!

All eyes will be on you as you take the stage for your solo musical number. You can't just show up on stage and
expect to sing well - it takes a bit of preparation beforehand in order to have a good sound come opening night.
Take a look at our tips for vocal success, then email us with your own tips and we'll add them here!

1. Remember to inhale. If you notice yourself running out of air before the end of a phrase, you need to inhale
more air before you begin each phrase.

2. If you have to sing multiple songs throughout your musical, keep a glass of room temperature water handy
offstage. It's not good for your voice if you sing with a dry throat, so make sure you stay hydrated.

3. You may be required to occasionally sing in a powerful, strong voice, but control your voice rather than sing
erratically at full force. Release enough air at a time to get a good, even tone.

4. Tighten up your singing some if you feel like you're sounding too flat or if your vibrato seems to be getting out
of control. Breathe deeply and focus on projecting the sound up.

5. Don't drink ice-cold drinks - the coldness shrinks your vocal cords. In order for you to sing properly, your vocal
cords need to be warm and loose, but iced drinks cause just the opposite.

6. Unless your director tells you differently, make sure you hold good posture (note: not stiff posture) while
you're singing. You should be aware that any move you make will change the sound of your voice.

7. Gargle once a day with warm water containing 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

8. Don't damage your voice by yelling in everyday conversations or by smoking. These are things you can easily
avoid if you really care about your voice.

9. Practice makes perfect. If you find that you have trouble with only a few certain notes, then practice singing
those specific notes. But don't exert yourself too much - only practice for about 30-45 minutes in one stretch.

10. Accept your range when you find it. Don't try to imitate other singers who are out of your personal range, or
you may risk hurting your voice.
