Greetings ye of the land of Dransik. Here are my words to tutor ye in the ways of people, like minded to the Kingdom of Primordia, who call themselves to the sacred art of roleplaying. If you have ventured into these records and desire to know more of what people mean by "rp" pay your attention here.
There is one sacred rule to roleplaying... make a choice and go with it. It is very much the same thing as acting in a theatrical production. You must, in acting, portray someone who is not completely you. Some people, in their portrayals use elements of themselves to act out the part, but for the greater part of it, their character is foreign to they themselves. The same is true for a roleplayed character. If ye wish to roleplay, the first thing you must do is decide who your character is. You must decide how that person will react to anything and these can be ways that the person behind the character would act. If someone acts rudely toward you, you can either choose to act rudely back, say profane things to them or gently push their offense asside. When you are bartering for goods, are you the type to go for maximum efficiency for your own financial gain, or are you a person who is just looking to improve the community around you? When you greet someone, do you say "hello", "hail" "greetings" and then bow or sallute or shake hands. These are choices you must make and the more solidly you make them, the more real your chracter in roleplay becomes. It also bears note that when you start, your play might be a little stinted and stale. That just takes time to improve. But practice, practice, practice. If at some point you find something doesn't work for you, change it. But realize people will have to get used to your change. In the end, you are who you make yourself to be.
Another enormous choice to make is your diction or word choice. Some people choose to speak in the high noble tongue, using words such as "thee" and "thou". There are even foul words in the high tongue. All of these require just alittle bit of research.
Still other people prefer the common tongue or battle tongue. It is one that we sometimes use when we cannot put a lot of thought into our word choices and the things we say sound a little more common. They are not as pretty, but still serve a purpose in communicating to other people.
Also, if ye must step away from your chosen character, use brackets []. [when i use brackets i can tell people that my landline is freezing up or I need to use the bathroom or answer the phone.] In this way, you can continue to have a character and still be able to communicate things that do not belong to the world of Dransik. [Dransik doesn't have cars, computers, mcdonalds or highschool. There is no homework or George Bush or America or Europe]
One of the best ways to improve your style of roleplaying is to find another person likeminded to speak the high speech. Some groups are more common and likely to this ideal than others. When you have discovered these people, do not announce that you are new to rp, [that becomes evident really quickly] just do it. I do not know a single soul of those who treasure the high speech who discourage people who are trying to learn its arts. Always be respectful though and have a good heart to mind that the other person is also working dilligently to put the poetry of high speech to good use.
