Todd's Ella Fitzgerald Page

Ella Fitzgerald is an important part of my music collection.  I picked up The Songbooks last year.  A little frightening at first, as it was the single most expensive purchase of music I ever made.  It's a 16 CD set that covers representative songs from some great american songwriters:

The whole thing is packaged very much like the original Vinyl LP version, except extra tracks have been added (mostly outtakes and flubs, but still very interesting).  The accompanying documentation is very illuminating.  If your knowledge of Ella's talent is limited to scat and be-bop, (as mine was) you'll find this set a shock; she's dynamite as a "straight" singer of these standards.

I later added Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong - The Complete Verve Recordings. A very interesting pairing of styles and voices, this set includes excerpts from Porgy and Bess.

With the addition of Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! and Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas, my Ella collection has swelled to 335 tracks.  I collect lyrics and file them away in my database.  Many of the standards I have found on the internet, particularly at the Frank Sinatra Lyric Site, but many eluded me.  There were about 85 that didn't seem to be out there anywhere.  I decided that I would do it the old fashioned way and transcribe them.  I'm making slow progress, but I'll share what I have.  As an experiment, you can snag all the files on this page in zip format.

My friends in the internet lyric community encouraged me to put up lyrics that I've found elsewhere as well.  If the page has my name at the bottom after "trancribed by" or "validated by" then I've either transcribed it myself or validated it against a recording.  If it doesn't, then it's something straight from my database, and it's been snagged from somewhere else.  One more thing: you'll find "the" under "t", because that's the way I structured the database.

I've linked all the songs here.  If a song is missing the lyric, it's noted next to the link, and I'm either looking for it or it's on my "to do" list to transcribe.  There's still a text file on this site that describes attributes of the song, even if I'm missing the lyric.
