College Life

This year began the first of those
Which many come to love
I came alone, without my friends
I felt some push and shove

Once here, I met the ones who I
Would soon begin to know
For each one here has stories that
They tell so they can show

The lives from which they started
The ties they hold so dear
Quite often they are much the same
Just kids who all chose here

So now I live away from home
Surrounded by new friends
They can’t replace the old
But they’ll stay by me till the end

The sense of family in my dorm
Is quite a sight to see
For now we all know all the rest
We’re a community

And in this way, we learn the most
More than our time in class
We learn to social interact
As well as how to pass

We learn of certain life skills
That cannot just be taught
We learn to keep a secret hid
Even if we are caught

These draw us close, and bring us near
So that we understand
That we must not just accept life
We now must take command

We must live out our lives for good
We must advance a cause
We mustn’t let them bring us down
Or sink in deep their claws

For here we are in college
A place to learn a lot
In difference fields of study
From math to chem. to pot

When our time at this place is done
We’ll never be the same
For of our selves, we must commit
We must take in the game

For this, as all the rest in life,
Is just a game they play
And happy should I be when I
Should learn to play someday

Then I’d control the ebb and flow
Of things that happen here
And things would change for better
As I aged throughout the year

And when I left, none’d be the same
For I could not but see
The faces pressed against the glass
That want return of me

I’d make the system better, yes
But in some ways, from care
I’d leave without a future plan
For human is to err

And college life would be the same
But it would not be so
For of this college, I’d lay claim
Wherever I may go!
