The Realm of the Dwarf

One day I chanced to walk the path
By which the small ones go
I stumbled on a little home
And felt a strange warm glow

The door was guarded by a dwarf
But jolly nice was he
We soon began to speak of things
That fascinated me

He told of magic, craft and art
He told of practice too
He spoke of how the wizards come
When there’s naught else to do

He talked a-plenty for a guard
But also much concealed
For much about the world of dwarfs
Should never be revealed

For him, it was a way of life
One focused much on war
The middle-earth, he claimed, did not
Have much they learned of more

He talked a while and told me lots
And when I yawned, he said
“I’ll nigh prepare a place where ye
May stop and rest yer head”

I kindly took the offer
As I suddenly was tired
I never thought to doubt one thing
And went to sleep inspired

At morn, I woke refreshed and new
I felt all lithe and spry
I suddenly felt energy
And thought I’d never die

This newfound life continued on
Through the course of the day
I realized that I felt young
My fears had gone away

I thanked the dwarf and journeyed on
As much was on my mind
The youthful life remained with me
For miles ‘yond my find

But then my body soon returned
And turn to self, I did
I still dream of a moment more
I might of age be rid

But all for naught and naught for all
For never will I find
Again this place where small dwarfs dwell
But in my own warped mind

I’ve searched the path that led me there
I’ve looked where e’er I might
But n’er again have I found that
Which made me young and light

For I had from this dwarf guard gained
As little as a glance
While he had full his end maintained
And yet left me to chance

The moral thus is plain to see
As all here know my tale
If we glimpse what we wish to be,
We oft are set to fail
