Sahyadri GPS Database

The Sahyadri GPS Database consists of a comprehensive collection of latitudes, longitudes and elevations of many Sahyadri peaks. These data comprise of actual GPS measurements as well as those derived from other sources (such as Survey maps, satellite imagery, etc).

The GPS data contained in this database is extremely useful in many ways. You can determine the EXACT distance (to within five meters or fifteen feet) between any two locations in this database using the downloadable distance-computing software tool provided at this website. You can also enter these coordinates into your GPS unit and know at all times where you are located in relation to the various Sahyadri peaks, irrespective of whether you are hiking or travelling in a vehicle, train or even in an airplane. Another useful application of these data is in software such as Google Earth, where you can view your selected Sahyadri location in three-dimensions upon entry of its GPS coordinates. You can even observe and identify low-earth orbit satellites during your hikes using these data! (View the home page for more information on these applications)

This database is continuously being expanded as contributions come in from all over. The latest version of this database is located at this website. It is recommended that you periodically download this database to ensure you have the latest version. Like other material at this website, this database is available to you for free download. You can also freely print or distribute it. You are also free to use the information contained here in any website, document or publication, but you must mention the contributor of the data, along with this website address.

Lastly, in view of the unfortunate degradation of many sites in the Sahyadris by some hikers who litter, deface ancient relics and cause other such damage, your help is needed. By downloading this document, you are also promising to take it upon yourself to do your best to spread the message of responsible hiking among your fellow hikers and beyond.
