Hypotension
(Low blood pressure)

Definition
Hypotension is the medical term for low blood pressure.
Low blood pressure is an abnormal condition when blood pressure is much lower than usual. This may cause symptoms such as dizziness or fainting.

Hypotension is usually defined when blood pressure has fallen so far that enough blood can no longer reach the vital organs such as brain, heart kidneys causing problems related to the affected organ.

Some individuals with healthy heart and blood vessels, have blood pressure well below.


Common Causes
Postural hypotension

Postural hypotension is the most common type of low blood pressure. In this condition, symptoms appear after a person sits up or stands quickly.

Causes for Postural hypotension

- Certain drugs used for high blood pressure.
- Chronic and poorly control diabetes mellitus where nerve damage has disrupted the reflexes that control blood pressure.

Causes for hypotension

- Drugs
* Diuretics
* Antidepressant drugs
* Anti-anxiety drugs
* Drugs for hypertension (high blood pressure)
* Some drugs used for heart diseases
- Alcohol
- Blood volume depletion (dehydration)
- Abnormalities of heart contractility
(heart failure, heart attack, rhythm disorders-arrhythmias)
- Syncope
- Vasodilatation due to advance neuropathy causing relative volume depletion

Treatment
Treatment depends on the causative factor.
