The Defence Research and Development Office (DRDO) is responsible to the Defence Ministry.  Its function is to direct and supervise the defence research project in accordance with research and development policy and objectives.  The agencies that actually conduct the research and development are the R&D units of each service.  DRDO acting as a secretariat to the Research and Development Board, will put forward for approval the five-year defence research and development policy and objectives before implementation.  The Defence R&D Board is composed of representatives from the different Services' directorates that take part in the determination of national defence policy.  The Board meets regularly to determine defence research and development directions and to approve projects that meet the Armed forces requirements.
