Note: All A ratings were given to superior gourmet food. A+’s were only given to food that actually made us make noises of joy. In my roommates’ case, anything that made her cry (in a good way) got an A+. Above average, very respectable food received B ratings. C’s were average food that was a cut above McDonalds. D ratings are of the processed, fast food variety and F’s are things that I would not feed my dog.
SERVER - Borge (pronounced like burger but without the "r". Kind of like burga. He was great! Told us all about his country, how he was hired, where he lives on property, it was really fascinating!
This is an all you can eat buffet, so you get plates and help yourself. The menu changes so the same things might not be there. The smoked fish is good as well as the herring, vegetables, the cheese, the mashed rutagebas (my favorite) and the hard-boiled eggs with crab. A definite change of pace.
Cheesecake with the Traditional Chocolate Troll Lady (A-)
Cinnamon Apple Thingy- (B+)
NOISE LEVEL – Moderate. The noise was not bad at all. You are in a "castle" type building and it can be a bit echoey.
KIDS – A moderate range of kids (some of the food may be too "weird" for American kids). No major melt-downs. All well behaved when we were there.
ATMOSPHERE – This has got to be the coolest (both in decor and tempurature) building in EPCOT. It reminds me of a Viking dining hall. Uber neato!
COST - Moderate $$
(NOTE: We have heard that as of 2003, you can no longer get hot items from the buffet, only cold ones. You need to order hot items and they bring them to you. You can still order all you want but it makes it difficult to pick and choose small bits. That was the beauty, getting to try small bits of "strange" food, finding out what you liked and then going back for more. I hate wasting food and would think that people would either waste or not order as many "entrees" because of not knowing if they would like them. I have also heard they have included more Americanized foods and kiddie foods (like Mac & Cheese). That is a shame because the charm was being brave and daring with food.
The cheesecake is made with goat cheese and makes for a very airy, light, creamy cheesecake. It was topped with a lemon layer which added to the flavor. Now about the troll, here is the deal. Borge told us that after you eat the dessert that it's traditional to lick the troll lady (stenciled on with powdered chocolate) off the plate for good luck - no fingers, no utensils, put the plate to your face and lick. So, that's what we did. We have pictures too! Hey, the cast member TOLD us to!
There was a whipped cream, cinnamon layered apple dessert called something in Norwegian that means covered up farmers daughters or something to that effect. It was very nice, light and a perfect complement to all the food you just scarfed.
