Anne Elliot - the heroine, Anne is 27 years old and regrets being persuaded to refuse the man she loved years ago

Captain Wentworth - the man Anne refused, he comes back into her life years later, but cannot forgive her

Sir Walter Elliot - Anne's father, who is very conceited and concerned with his looks

Elizabeth Elliot - Anne's older sister who is very like her father, and slightly worried that she isn't married

Mrs. Clay - Elizabeth's close friend who returned to her father's house after an unprofitable marriage with two children (the children are never seen)

Lady Russell - a close friend of the Elliot family, it was she who convinced Anne to refuse Captain Wentworth

Mary Musgrove - Anne's younger sister who is constantly fancying herself ill

Charles Musgrove - Mary's husband, Charles wanted to marry Anne but ended up marrying Mary instead

Mr. and Mrs. Musgrove - Charles' parents who are very good humoured and jolly

Henrietta and Louisa Musgrove - Charles' sisters, both are good humoured but not as superior as Anne

Mrs. Croft - Captain Wentworth's sister

Admiral Croft - Mrs. Croft's husband, he rents the Elliot's home, Kellynch, when they are in debt

Captain Harville - an injured friend of Captain Wentworth's, who lives in Lyme

Mrs. Harville - Captain Harville's wife who is an accomplished nurse

Captain Benick - was once engaged to Harville's sister who died while he was at sea, he is constantly gloomy and lives with the Harvilles

Mr. Elliot - the heir to Sir Walter's estate, Kellynch, he was not on speaking terms with his family when he suddenly returns
