Pride and Prejudice Summary

Episode I

In this first installment of Pride and Prejudice, we are introduced to the Bennet family. Mrs. Bennet's main concern is marrying her five daughters - Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia. When Mr. Bingley moves into the neighborhood, he seems like the perfect match for sweet Jane. At the Assembly Room ball, Mr. Bingley is taken with Jane. However, his handsome and proud friend, Mr. Darcy, snubs spirited Elizabeth. The joke is on him though, for no sooner has he decided that she is not worth his attention, he becomes attracted to her fine eyes and pretty face.

After the ball, Mr. Bingley's sisters, Miss Bingley and Mrs. Hurst, invite Jane Bennet to eat luncheon with them. Mrs. Bennet gets the bright idea to make Jane ride there on horseback in the rain, hoping that she will have to stay the night. Her plan works too well when Jane catches cold and has to stay for longer.

Elizabeth, concerned about her sister, walks the three miles to Netherfield, Mr. Bingley's residence. She is invited to stay to comfort her sister. She does so, unaware that the man she despises, Mr. Darcy, is actually interested in her. Because of Lizzy's dislike of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley's snobbish sisters, when they finally leave Netherfield, she tells Jane "I have never been so happy to leave a place in my life."
