Do you know that the rare Chinese otter which was once believed to have died out could still be
living in Hong Kong? Conservationists discovered a trail of foot prints which proved to belong to this rare species near the traditional shrimp ponds at Mai Po. The Chinese otter is a cousin of the European species. It has a shy character and is only active during the night. It has webbed paws and live near fishponds and the nearby burrows. It feeds on fish, crab and shrimp. |

It was known that the Chinese otters only occur in the Deep
Bay mudflats and the fishponds around Mai Po. However, with the fishponds being redeveloped and Deep Bay becoming heavily polluted, the habitats of the otters and their food sources are being destroyed gradually. Local environmentalists said that if the pollution becomes too bad, the resistance to disease of the otters will be lowered which is what is happening to the Chinese White Dolphins. |
