Labs and reports

Date(s): I should have labs going back to 1971 but I don't.. The first labs I have documented are from 1977
There are many areas tested for liver disease you mostly watch the liver enzymes as markers to tell you how well or unwell your liver is functioning

Liver test almost normal liver functions are 3 pts high at 38 (alt)
Blood sugar 132 - should be 110
Hep antibodies positive for B and C
? Now this was the first time I had heard of B or C type Hepatitis.
Before this time I had been told I had a alcoholic liver. even when I didn't drink!

For several years I ignored liver pain and many symptoms until 2002

At this time I get a quant test and many other tests CBC which is basically normal. I will make a note that before going on combo therapy my white blood count was normal at 4.3 red blood cells normal at 4.8
Platelets are fine
The Hepatitis C RNA Quant by PCT  comes back with my RNA or viral load as 850000 IU/mL - one million 'copies'

I have a liver biopsy which comes back as  grade  3; stage 3  Fibrosis.

This is when I am told I need the only treatment available: PEG interferon once a week and ribavirin every day, both according to your weight, but I am put in a study ( for reasons of economics and also because the medicine is available without a wait. The study is PEG interferon once a week according to your weight and 800 mg of ribavirin every day.

I am told the study medicines will be taken for a total of 24 to 48 weeks, with follow-up visits for another 24 weeks when you won't be taking the medicines. The actual time you are in the study depends on the group you are in and how the medicines work for you.
Visits to clinic are at week 2, 4, 8, 12, and 18 weeks, and then a visit every 6 weeks until stop taking the medicines. The follow up visits will be 4, 12, and 24 weeks after you stop taking medicines. I am told at each visit up to 5 tablespoons of blood will be collected. I am given a side effect page(s) to sign.
These side effects are from both Interferon and Ribavirin.
Some of the sides are as follows:  Diabetes. high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, kidney failure, depression and suicide, thyroid problems , infections, blindness are some of the side effects. Great choice we are given. This is the only cure??
I sign the consent on March 21, at 1 pm 2002, begin medication

These are the only normal liver functions I have had in over 12 years! they are within normal range. But my white blood is so low and side effects are so severe;  I am told to drop the dose of my PEG intron. Then  I got even sicker from the lower does and went to emergency room. the  Doctor on call was very upset at my vitals. Blood pressure was real high. Normally my blood pressure is about 120 over 89 and it was up around 200 over 140..  I told them I was unable to contact my gastroendorologist? very involved with the "Study results' so much so, that I felt they were more important than me as a patient.
To make a long horrible experience short I was told to quit TX and see what happened.. Basically my sides were too severe to continue. Then after my labs (see below) went back up and worse.. I was told by the same doctor  I needed to commit to treatment for the full course of treatment.
At this point I left his office sobbing. .. I had to take the bus, as I couldn't  trust my eyes or nerves to drive my car. Plus I was shaking and now sobbing too much to drive!

Date: July 3, 2002
I had a full panel  with Liver enzymes and CBC.. I will only enter the important readings here:

2,173
Began with 4,400
went down to 730

Note that after treatment my treatment my Neutrophils went back up but not to the count before I began treatment, but my liver enzymes have already begun to climb back up.

I had labs again in Aug..2002
Glucose was high at 149 normal is 65 - 110

My ALT is still high at 53
AST at 39
Cholesterol was low at 137   normal being 162 - 199
and my weight had dropped to almost 100 lb.. I am 5 foot 5 inches and usually weigh 120 lb.
By September I had spent over $1,000 on herbs and extracts.. On following page for that info: trying to keep my liver enzymes down and viral load down. Which had dropped to 19,300 from 1,000,000 at the beginning of treatment.

December  labs show my
ALT (SGPT) up to 467
AST (SGOT)
GGT is up to 119 from 45

AND MY VIRAL LOAD is now UP TO 6,100,000 copies
Platelets still low at 148  normal being 150- 400
I am so depressed I go see my doctor ... this is when he tells me to "commit to treatment"  I file a complaint with AMA.. Which goes nowhere!

January 2003 labs.. Still climbing
ALT (SGPT) is up to 431
AST ( SGOT) up to 219!   I feel terrible and still only weigh close to 100 lb.. I quit all the supplements back in October and it takes me until July 2003 to feel  like I can stand up or cook, or eat. I have however gained 12 lb... I am raising a 14 yr. old grandson by myself. Haven't had any labs done since January.( 7 months ago)  I don't know what my next step is???????

I know the microhydrin and all the products at Royal body care did NOT work for me and they are expensive. They have tons of documentation to show how their products should work .. but they don't!
I also know the Thymus extracts from Lloyd Wright didn't work for me either. And my liver is progressively becoming hardened pass the point of anything helping.
I now have  achy joints, headaches, and  memory problems and generally feel badly and sick. ..  Energy level is very low and appetite is also.. I can't sleep well and may try treatment again. This time I will NOT be in a study and will have a doctor that is committed to me.. not a study.

To be Continued. This is a work in progress.. pray and do yoga and affirmations daily. This helps with stress and pressure of  feeling older than my 53 years..

As you can see my enzymes are a bit high, but have come down from last year.. This is when I stopped all the supplements and herbs and just started eating good, drinking distilled water and not doing combo tx.
My weight is up from 100 lb to about 120 or almost. I have more energy, and as time goes by birthdays all round. I am now 54, my grandson is 15

This is an ongoing work in progress
I found a wonderful site which explains the meaning of all these letters and tests and results.
I will insert it here.
