a dream in one act

shortstorys

when 'harry potter' was first published, religious parents
exploded at the amount of evil in the books.
i decided to hit them upside the head.

Harry Potter Is Evil

"You're kidding, right?"

"No, I'm serious."

"Man, that sucks that your mom won't let you read 'Harry Potter.'"

Jake kicked a stone with shoe. It skipped off the ground and plunked into the small pond in Sam's backyard. He looked over at Sam, his best friend for years.

"Why won't she let you?"

"Says it full of evil. She always telling other parents, 'Too much reference to evil for my little boy.'"

"Have you tried talking to your mom?"

"Yeah, no use, but she gave me something better to read."

"Really? What is it? Dr. Seuss?"

"What's wrong with Dr. Seuss?" Sam asked. "But this book is really cool. It has everything! I betcha it's even better than 'Harry Potter,'" he paused. "I know its much more popular."

"What's it called?"

"The Bible."

Jake froze, and just looked at his friend with a "you're kidding" look.

"The Bible? You read the Bible?"

"No... well, yes. Have you read it?"

"Of course not."

"You really should. It's really cool."

"I'm not religious."

"Doesn't matter, it's really great."

"It's about God, though."

"Kind of. Right now at the part where this naked chick is told by this evil, talking snake in this big ol' garden to eat an apple. But the apple is, like, poison or something. She ends up ruining life for man. It's really cool."

"Yeah, so?"

"There's more though. Well, the second part of the book sucks. It's all preachy and stuff, instead of the fighting and sex in the first part. There's stories of grown-ups hitting each other, then drinking wine, and getting to bed with their servant girls. Then there's this scourging thing, and they put a crown of thorns on this guy's head. They whip him, and then nail him to a cross by his hands and feet, then stab him with a spear!"

"Wow... that is better than 'Harry Potter!' Are there witches?"

"Yeah, actually there are. And there's battles with the Devil and this Goliath thing."

"Sweet! Let me read some!"
