May 10, 2000; Carey's big
week spurs ABC to ratings win
By Rick Kissell
HOLLYWOOD (Variety)
- It's just the way ABC Drew it up.
ABC posted
easy ratings victories for the May 1-7 week, powered by a Drew Carey-heavy
week that featured the star in six hours of programming -- an hour more than
Regis Philbin.
According to
Nielsen, ABC won its 19th straight week in total viewers with its second
largest audience of the season (18.3 million viewers), trailing only Super
Bowl week.
Carey's
ratings-winning Sunday musical ``Geppetto'' undoubtedly reaped promotional
dividends from the comedian's omnipresence on the network. He appeared on two
nights of celebrity ``Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' and also yukked it up in
two half-hours of his sitcom, ``The Drew Carey Show,'' and an hour of his
Thursday improv show, ``Whose Line is it Anyway.''

Some life tips from Drew Carey: set goals, drink beer with friends and value
what's in your heart and mind.
Carey, who
dropped out of Kent State University, told 2,800 Cleveland State graduates
Sunday that he got drunk and overslept on the last day students could drop
courses without penalty.
He got D's
and F's.
``But look
at me now,'' Carey said. ``I'm a millionaire.''
But material
goods aren't the most important things in life, according to Carey, a
Cleveland native. ``Things don't make me nearly as happy as talking and having
a beer with my friends. And that's something everyone can do.''
He thanked
Cleveland State for awarding him an honorary doctorate.
``I've always want to walk up to
women and say, `Hey, baby, trust me. I'm a doctor,''' said Carey, a comedian
and the star of his own sitcom, ``The Drew Carey Show.''
