I traced the pen and ink version onto tracing paper and used carbon paper to transfer that image to the plate, which had a hard ground on it. I chose those lines that I felt were important, such as outlines, borders, and the general layout.
With these guidelines, I planned to put more work into the plate, no longer looking at the original pen and ink work as a guide. From this point on, the plate would evolve on its own...
