*************************************************************

Three human beings stepped down on Roswell ground. It was the first time
they had touched Roswell soil since June. It was now late August and school
was about to begin in a few weeks. They had just come back from Liz's aunts
house. After that fateful day where all the good-bye's were said, they had
decided not to waste their summer in Roswell. An opportunity to spend the
summer at Liz's aunts house in Massachusetts had come up and the three of
them eagerly agreed.

Alex Whitman. He walked around a bit to stretch his legs. The three of them
had been cramped up in that little cab for awhile now. And they really
wanted to walk around. His first thoughts were of Isabel. Luckily they had
left on good terms. He had told her that he knew she had to go some things,
on her own. They kissed and parted, no fights, no tears, they just departed.
From what he and Maria heard from Liz, they had contacted their mother, she
was a strong warrior of some sort, and that they had a destiny to save their
planet.

Maria Deluca. She came out of the cab next and once again found herself in
Roswell. She had loved being in Massachusetts for the summer. It was just so
different. So different than Roswell New Mexico. So different from Michael
Guerin. At least he admitted his feelings to her by telling her he loved
her. If she died tomorrow, she would be satisfied in knowing she broke
Michael's walls and help Michael become human enough to care. Liz had told
her of Michael's mission on life. To save their planet. Her Michael, was a
second in command to Max, and he lived in a previous life, whoever would
have thought? She wanted to see him again, and yet she didn't. The last time
she saw him he said he loved her too much, said good-bye and then he left.
She didn't want to ruin the Hallmark ending by seeing him and possibly
having him give her the cold shoulder.

Liz Parker. She was the last one to see the aliens. The last one to see Max,
Michael, Isabel, and Tess before they departed for Massachusetts. She had
been heartbroken the most. Over and over again she had gone over the
scenario, with Maria, with Alex, and with her aunt, leaving out the alien
details of course. She had tried to figure out if what she did was the right
thing. And she came to the same conclusion each time. That she did make the
right decision. Max had a destiny, and she, she was free to live life as she
wanted to. Yet she didn't know a life any more that didn't involve Max
Evans. That would probably be one of her hardest lessons in life, how to
live and love without Max.

The three of them never went a day without thinking about what was
happening. Without wondering if their special 'other' was thinking about
them too. It would take a lot of time. But hopefully with enough of it,
things would proceed before. Before September of 1999.

"Welcome back to Roswell, New Mexico." Alex said as they all walked towards
the Crashdown.

"Yeah, Liz remind me to send you aunt a thank-you letter. That was probably
the best summer I've had in a long time. Who knew Massachusetts could be so
great. Liz, if you ever get into Harvard, I am coming along with you to
liver there." Maria said with a smile.

Liz smiled at her friends. "Yeah, sure Maria. You guys want to go something
tonight? How about mini-golf. I thought we were pretty good at mini-golf in
Massachusetts, now it's time to show Roswell our PGA skills. What do you
say?"

"Yeah sounds great." Alex and Maria said in unison.

"Question." Alex said. "What happens if we run into them?"

Liz turned around to look at Alex. "Alex, we've talked about this. We just
take it as we're friends, but not close friends with them. We need to let
them have their destiny and not interfere. I thought we all agreed on this?"

"Oh yeah, we did. I was just curious. Anyways, I am going to go home and hit
the hay, I think I have jet lag." He said as he tightened his bags on his
shoulders.

Maria re-grabbed her bags too. "Yeah, me too. I'll see-ya later Liz."

"Bye" Alex said.

"Alright, see-ya guys." Liz said before she walked into the Crashdown.
All she wanted to do was go upstairs, put her stuff away, take a nice long
bubble bath, and then get some sleep.

Lucky her when she walked through the doors, it's almost as if she sensed
him there.

He must have sense her too, because the moment she walked in he turned and
looked at her, like he knew it was going to be her.

Liz saw a smile appear on Max's face. It was a wide open grin, but it was a
smile none the less.

She gave him a small smile, to show there were no hard feelings between
them. Then she noticed that there were only two other people sitting there
with Max. Isabel and Michael were with him. She had expected to see Tess
right next to Max, with her destiny. Yet Liz pushed the thoughts away and
headed to the back stairway where she could go upstairs and relax.

PART 2: Max and Liz

Liz hadn't felt the headache that now pounded in her head. She must have
just missed the pounding sensation in her head. Or maybe it was there
because she had seen Max. The guys she desperately loved yet couldn't be
with because of destiny. 'Whoever invented destiny should be shot' She
thought to herself. Then she laughed because of her stupidness. "I just need
to lie down and get some sleep" She said aloud to herself as she began to
lay down to sleep.

"If that's what you want." She heard a voice from her door say.

A stunned Liz turned around to meet the gaze of her sudden intruder. "Max,
wha- what are you doing here?" Again Liz could feel her heart pounding in
her chest as she looked at him. She noticed something was different about
him. Something more sad and melancholy about him, she could see it in his
eyes.

A small smile played upon his lips. Liz could tell he didn't smile very
often, she didn't know how she knew. She just sort of knew. "I just came to
say hi, and to see how you were doing, how was your summer?" He took a step
closer to her, he didn't want to scare her away, not knowing how she would
react.

"Oh." Was all Liz said at first. "My summer was great." Somehow she just
could say so many words. Like her mouth only permitted her to say so much to
him.

"I didn't see you at all, did you go someplace, I asked your parents and
they just said you went on a trip." Then his faced turned red. 'Damn' He
thought to himself. 'Don't let her think you spent the whole summer
wondering where she was. Don't let her know you can't live without her.'

'He asked about me?' Liz thought. "Yeah, Alex, Maria, and I went to my aunts
house in Massachusetts for the summer. It was a nice change from Roswell.
So, um, what's new in Roswell.?" She asked him.

He pondered for a moment. As if there was something to tell her, but he
didn't know how to. "I guess I should just get it out and say it." He said
to her.

This brought up Liz's worst fears. 'Oh god, what he go and marry Tess? Is
she pregnant with his baby? Did he find his way home?' He mind raced. "Max,
you can tell me anything." She didn't know how she was pulling off this cool
outer composure, when inside she was a wreck.

"It's about Tess." He said slowly.

'Oh no.' Liz's thoughts told her.

Max took a gulp of air into his lungs. "She's dead. We don't really know
what happened to her. She disappeared one night. And then the next day
Nasedo came to us and told us that she had died. She had gone out of bounds,
or something to that extent. We still don't know for sure what killed her.
But we are almost 100% sure she's dead."

Liz didn't know whether to scream for joy, or to feel the biggest amount of
sadness. Then she decided, be sad. Max loved her, even if it was in a past
life. "Oh, Max, I'm so sorry." She went over and hugged him. Immediately
after, she backed away. Feeling that closeness to Max that she loved so
much. Yet she knew she could never have that again. It wasn't meant to be.
Max wasn't her soulmate. They were meant for other people.

Next part: Michael and Maria

PART 3: Michael and Maria

Michael had seen Maria and Alex walk off towards their homes after they
dropped Liz off at the Crashdown. He initially wasn't going to do anything.
He wasn't going to talk to Maria, he wasn't going to think about Maria. But
when he saw Max rush off to follow Liz upstairs, he figure he may as well
see how Maria was. Even if he didn't need anyone. Really, he didn't need
anyone! Or so he told himself every day.

He walked the route he knew by heart. Sometimes during the summer, if he
found himself really missing her a lot, he would walk by her house.
Sometimes if he knew that Amy was gone he would look in her window and hope
that she had come home. He didn't know where she had gone all summer. But he
could tell that she wasn't there.

When he got to her house, he didn't see the red little Jetta, so he guessed
Amy was gone. He stealthily peaked into her window and saw her sitting on
her bed looking at a photo. A smile played on his lips when he assumed it
was of him.

"Good-Bye" Maria said to the picture before she placed it back on her
dresser. Michael's jaw dropped a mile when he saw who the picture was of. It
was Maria and some guy, they were both laughing and hugging each other,
tightly! Too tightly for Michael's liking. 'God, she goes away for a few
months and already she finds another guy?'

"Michael!" Maria screamed when she turned around and saw him standing in the
window.

"Busted" He said lightly under his breath.

Maria reached over and opened the window. "What are you doing here? You know
you can't just always arrive unannounced! That's not how things work."

Casually he pulled himself through the window. "Maria, just sh--" He was
about to say it, but he didn't "I just came to see how your summer was..
Obviously it was, eventful" He said, notioning to the picture.

"You mean Chris? Gee Michael, I just don't get you. You dumped me because
you were 'scared' of what you could do to me. Saying you loved me too much.
Then you walk off. I don't get it, you don't want to be with me, but you
don't want anyone else to have me either. What is it that you want? You want
me to pine away for you my whole life and never move on? Please, explain it
to me, because I'm a little confused!" Sometimes, Maria just could not
understand anything with a Y chromosome.

Michael ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "There you go, twisting my
words around. I don't want you to become a distant stranger, it wasn't my
choice that I didn't want us to be together. Well, ok it was my choice, but
it was a choice with my head, and not my.." Michael paused for a moment, "my
heart."

Maria took a step closer to him. "So what are you saying?"

"I don't know. I mean, if you want to see other guys, there is no chance I
can stop you. And I want you to move on, I guess. I don't want you to be
unhappy though. And if, this Chris guy in the picture makes you happy
then.."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Chris and I just had some fun in Massachusetts, that's
where I was all summer. In Massachusetts with Liz and Alex. We met up with
Chris one day on Boston and we got to be sort of close. Nothing serious
happened, and it's over now. I don't think I will ever see him again. God, I
don't even know why I am telling you all of this." She put her hand on her
forehead and walked around her room.

"Well, I guess I should be going now. See-ya. One more thing, if any guy
gives you hell, you let me know. I'll teach him a lesson." Michael smiled
and was about to leave the same way he entered.

"Michael, I was wrong." Maria said suddenly.

He didn't know what she meant by this, so he turned to her. "About what
Maria?"

"About you, your not the same guy you were a year ago. Your almost normal,
not that brooding, space-boy, jerk that I once knew." A smiled crossed her
face, to show him that she was just playing around with him, in their usual
banter.

He smiled a little too, "Thanks, I think." And with that, Michael walked
out.

PART 4: Isabel and Alex

"Fine, leave." Isabel said after Michael, when he rushed out to go see
Maria. He didn't say where he was going, but she could tell he wanted to see
her.

So there she was, Isabel Evans, left alone at the Crashdown. "Might as
well." she muttered to herself, a little distraught that her brother and a
guy she considered a brother had left her without fair warning.

Then, a lightbulb went off in her head. She had been dying to see Alex. She
wanted to see how he was doing. After all, he was so great last spring when
she had to go off and do things without him. He was a true gentleman, and
the best boyfriend she ever had, probably the greatest one she ever would
have. She decided she would try and find him, see how he was doing.

After Tess's death the three aliens had silently decided to go back as if
things were normal. Yet they would do their best to find their enemies,
whoever they might be. Yet they didn't want to do anything out of the
ordinary or peculiar in order to do that. So, in Isabel's mind, that meant
trying to get things back with Alex. She needed him now more than ever, and
she thought that if saving their home planet didn't work out, she would have
him.

She had a plan though, if he didn't want her back, then she would accept
that and let it alone. But she was hoping that wasn't the case.

Ten minutes later she was at Alex's doorstep. When she looked inside, she
saw Alex's mother standing there. 'Guess there's no need to ring the door
bell' she thought to herself.

"Why hello." Mrs. Whitman said to her, as if it were a question.

Isabel smiled a sweet smile, a smile to give parents the good impression.
"Hi, I'm Isabel, is Alex home?"

"Ah, yes, Isabel, I've heard Alex mention you before. He's upstairs, make
yourself at home, he's unpacking from his summer vacation to Massachusetts.
Sounds like he had a lot of fun. Well, I'm off to my conference, it was nice
meeting you Isabel." Mrs. Whitman smiled at Isabel.

'So that's where Alex was all summer, I wonder if he met anyone. What does
it matter, I can expect him to wait for me, stupid.' Isabel said to herself
mentally. "Nice meeting you too Mrs. Whitman." And with that she walked into
the house, while Mrs. Whitman walked over to her car.

"Alex? Hello? You up here? Alex?" Isabel said once she got to the top of his
stairs.

"Isabel?" She heard a voice say from inside one of the rooms. "Isabel, uh,
hey." He said in his nervous voice.

A smile crept up on Isabel's face when she saw him. It was like she couldn't
stop it. She had never felt like this with any other boy, that was for
certain. "I've missed you." She said bluntly as she walked over and hugged
him.

Alex was a little shocked by this sudden affection after being away all
summer long. "Yeah, yeah, you too. I mean, I missed you too."

"So how was your summer?" She asked him, hoping to strike up a conversation.

They spent the rest of the afternoon talking. They talked about what had
happened, how their summers went, and about the future. They had decided
not to get back together immediately. They were going to take it slow and
see how things progressed. They would be friends.

Like Max and Michael, Isabel still didn't know much about saving their
planet and coming back there. So a relationship would be so hard if you knew
that it could possibly end it heartache. But is that a risk everyone wanted
to take?

PART 5: Max and Liz / SOME Michael and Maria

Max left soon after he told Liz about Tess's death. She still knew she

couldn't get back together with Max. There was just so many complications

that she didn't know the worth of their love if it went anything beyond

friendship.

She once heard a saying that said 'If you love something that you know you

can't have, let it go.' She now knew what they meant when they said this.

Her tears soon ran down her cheeks again when she realized all she was

giving up. She knew deep in her heart, that letting Max Evans go was the

right thing to do. She refused to be the girl who wouldn't let him be free.

She also knew that letting him go would be one of the hardest things she

would ever have to do.

There was another saying, 'Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger.'

Well if that was true, then by the time she got over Max, she would be

steel.

She watched on her balcony as Max walked away. She felt as if she could

almost feel his pain. Like she knew what he was feeling, but that was most

likely because she was feeling the same thing.

She had a connection with Max, ever since he healed her, she could feel his

pain and anguish. "It's for the best." She said softly, as if he could hear

her.

As tears continued to fall from her face, she went back inside, reliving too

many memories that her and Max had on the balcony.

She walked over to her CD played and placed a CD in the CD played.

Happiness --Abra Moore

I didn't know it could feel like this

I didn't know the hurt

And I try to explain to myself

But I can't find no word

So I lie about it

And I tell 'em I'm feeling fine

And I'll cry about it

Hoping tomorrow will change my mind

Happiness has come to this

And God, it's such a heavy burden to bear

I didn't know it could be like this

I didn't know it could go so far

And I try to reveal the part of me

But you can't find no scar

And I lie about it

And I tell 'em I'm feeling fine

And I cry about it

Hoping tomorrow will change my mind

Happiness has come to this

And God, it's such a heavy burden to bear

During the middle of the song, Maria came into Liz's room. She knew that she

had probably seen Max already.

She walked over and hugged her friend. "This song." Liz said to Maria

between sobs.

After listening for a few minutes, Maria understood. This song described

what Liz was going through, what they were all going through.

"So you saw Max?" Maria asked.

Liz slowly nodded, "Yeah, he came up to my room right after I got here. God,

Maria, I thought it would be easier a bit. I spent the whole summer away,

and even had some dates in Massachusetts. So why can't I just get over him?

Why can't he get over me?"

Maria gave a little laugh, "Because, in some way your meant to be with him.

And yet since we are human we can make our own destinies, and we chose not

to be with them. Or in my case, Michael chose not to be with me, but that's

just plain old Michael for you." She tried to get a little smile out of her

friend, but no such luck.

"I love him so much. I really do, and I guess that's why this is so hard.

I've never loved anyone as much as I love him, I'll probably never love

anyone like I do him. Maybe that's because Max Evans is a special case." Liz

grabbed a tissue and began to wipe away some tears that were still on her

cheek. Her tears seemed to have slowed down a bit.

Maria nodded in agreement. "Yeah, that's true. But we just have to get over

them the best ways we know how. We have to let them have their destinies.

Even if Max's young bride is dead."

"How did you find out about Tess?" Liz asked in curiosity.

Maria smiled, "Michael, he came over right when I got home too, and we had a

talk. We told me about Tess, and we talked about us. We're going to be

friends, I think that's what came of our conversation."

"I'm such a bad person!" Liz wailed randomly.

"Liz, Liz, how are you a bad person?" Maria asked, wondering where Liz's

left-field statement came from.

Liz sighed and slouched on her floor. "I'm bad because I am so selfish. I am

selfish because I still want to be together with him. I keep remembering

when we were together and how he just brought out this different person in

me. I loved that girl he brought out. It was like, when we were together, we

completed each other. I knew how he felt, and I knew him. Not many people

can find a love, a love in which their other will do anything for them. Max

would have died for me, and now I have to die for him. I have to give him

up, at all costs."

"Liz, that doesn't make you a bad person, that makes you human. It's what

makes all of us human." Maria said to her.

"No, that's not all. I'm jealous, I'm jealous because I wish Max was human

and not part alien. I wish his home planet wasn't enslaved by some bad alien

race. I wish that they would never have to go home to save their entire

race. I'm jealous that Tess was married to Max in another life and not me.

Most of all, I wish that Max would fight harder to keep me. And for all of

that, I hate myself. I hate the selfish and jealous person I have turned

into." Liz walked over and hugged Maria again. She needed support right now,

more than ever.

Maria understood completely. She felt the same way towards Michael. And she

had the same jealousies, especially her jealousy that Isabel and Michael

were in love in a past life, and that was something she was never apart of.

"I know, I feel the same way. The best thing we can do for them now is let

them go. And whether or not Max realizes it, you are doing the best you can

for him. Somehow, things will work out, for better or for worse, I don't

know. But things will turn out ok, I have a gut feeling about that."

Liz smiled at her friend, "Thank you Maria." She said.

Maria gave a confused look, "For what?"

"For everything, for knowing what I'm going through, for comforting me, for

understanding, and for the advice. Your the best." Liz said.

Smiling proudly, Maria said "Yes, yes, I know, I know! Ha, whoever thought

that 3 aliens could make us such complete saps?"

"I don't know Maria, I think that we were destined to be completely jaded by

them." Liz told Maria.

"Destiny sucks." Maria said, saying what they both knew was the truth.

PART 5: Michael/Maria and Max/Liz

After Michael got through talking to Maria, he decided not to go home. Instead
he
would go see how Max was. He knew he was probably mentally unstable after an

encounter with Liz. Over the summer, he put on the biggest of shows in trying
to act
like not having Liz around didn't affect him. But he knew that not being able
to be
with Liz was killing him.

"Hey, what's up man?" Michael said as he climbed in Max's window.

Max was sitting on his bed just staring at the ceiling. "You do know you can
use the
door, right?"

Michael shrugged, "Yeah, but the windows more fun. So, I am guessing you had
an
encounter with Liz eh?" he said.

Still Max didn't look at Michael, he intently kept looking at the ceiling. "Yeah,
and
I just don't get it!" he said in a sudden outburst.

Scratching his head, Michael looked confused. "What do you mean? Don't get what?"

"Liz, I mean Tess isn't even alive anymore, and somehow I think Liz still feels
like
she needs to let me have my stupid Destiny. I want to get back together with
her, or
even have a friendship with her. I just want to be around her. But she acts
like I
am the plague. As if she never wants to see me again. For instance, when I
told her
about Tess, she gave me a hug, and for a minute, it felt like old times. And
then
she backed away from me really fast. I don't know what to do." Max hadn't planned
on
telling

Michael gave a quick smile, "No, actually I came from Maria's house."

Max easily saw the grin in his face. "Oh really? Does she know that you went
to her
house, just to see if she was home, practically every day?"

"Ha, funny. We actually had a decent conversation and we talked, mostly about
us, and
summertime. Seems like the three of them had a great summer together in
Massachusetts. Maria even met some guy, but she says it's over. And I believe
her,
besides, I think we're going to be friends. Which is good, that way I can keep
her
at just enough arms length to protect her from, whatever emotional hazards
I cause
with my powers, and yet I can still watch over her at the same time." Michael
said.

Max's expression went blank. "Maria and Liz met guys over vacation? I wonder
if Liz
met a guy over vacation. Well duh, she probably did, I mean anyone would have
to be
dumb and blind not to notice Liz. Maybe that's why she is still pushing me
away, she
probably met some graduate from Harvard Law and..."

"Whoa, calm down Max, your rambling. As far as I know, it was only Maria who
had a
fling, as I like to call it over the summer. I am pretty sure that Liz is still

single and available. Anyway, back to Maria. I'm not sure if in the future
a
relationship with Maria would work, I mean, you saw what I did to Pierce. That
could
have been anyone that I didn't like. What if me and her got in a huge fight
and I
did something to her? I would never forgive myself!" Michael said, thinking
aloud.

Max shrugged "well you love her right?"

"Yeah, so what does that have to do with anything?" Michael asked, confused.

"Well, if you love her, I can guarantee that no matter how much of a fight you
have,
you will still love her, and I doubt that you will do anything to hurt her..
It's not
in your nature. You hurt Pierce because Pierce deserved it for all he did to
me, and
what he would have done for anyone. I say, that if it feels right, then have
another
go with Maria." He finished.

Michael shrugged, "well I'll wait and see how things work out. Do you mind some

friendly advice for Liz?" he asked, not wanting to step on his toes with Liz.

"Yeah, go ahead." Max said, sitting on his bed. "If it were me? I would fight
for her.
And not give up easily."

"But--" Max tried to cut him off

"Just sit and listen." Michael said to him, pushing him back on the bed. "Yeah,
I
know, you think Liz wants nothing to do with you. Well I think your wrong.
She's
trying to do what she thinks is best for you. She accepts your destiny and
she
accepts the idea that you have a mission in life, to save out planet. And true,

someday we will have to go back and help. But who knows how long that will
be? If
you can get 1, 2, 3 or more years with the girl you love, then why not? I know
you
are willing to have a re

"Wow, you have changed so much in this past year." Max said.

Michael laughed, "You know, Maria said the exact same thing."

"Then it must be true." Max said, looking in wonder, at his friend who had somehow

gained so much knowledge in the past 12 months.
