WITH ARMS WIDE OPEN- CREED
Well I just heard the news today
It seems my life is going to change
I close my eyes, begin to pray
The tears of joy stream down my face
With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to the place
I’ll show you everything
With arms wide open.
Well I don’t know if I’m ready
To be the man I have to be
I’ll take a breath, take her by side
We stand in awe, we’ve created life
With arms wide open
Under the sunlight
Welcome to the place
I’ll show you everything
With arms wide open
Now everything has changed
I’ll show you love
I’ll show you everything
With arms wide open
If I had just one wish
Only one demand
I hope he’s not like me
I hope he understands
That he can take this life
And hold it by the hand
And he can greet the world
With arms wide open..
"Go Max! Run!" Jacey Evans screamed at the top of her lungs as her twin brother Max ran full speed down the lacrosse field. Jacey was extremely proud of her brother, who happened to be the first string midfielder of the Luca Carolla High varsity lacrosse team. The pride was not one sided at all. Max was just as proud of his sister who was the girl’s varsity goalie. Jacey and Max shared an incredible bond. They had the typical "twin telepathy." They always felt each other’s emotions. Today Jacey could definitely feel her brother’s enthusiasm. It was too bad that their mother had to miss the game, but she was tied up in executive meetings. "Comon Max one more goal! That’s all we need!" The tension was so thick, as Iomega High was the archrival of LCH. Max lowered his arm and fired a shot that flew right through the goalie’s legs, making the wining goal. "Oh Yeah! That’s my Brother!!" Jacey screamed at he top of her lungs.
"Mom you should have seen that shot, man was it good. But of course if I were the goalie then I’d have stopped it."
"Yeah right Jacey you know I’d rock you any day. Aunt Maria, Mac, tell her." This was the typical dinnertime conversation of the Parker-DeLuca –Guerin -Evans household. Like Jacey and Max, Mackenzie had also never met her father. Both of their mothers refused to talk about it, saying that it was too painful to dredge up. But they did know that their fathers were brothers and that their other cousin Isabel was the daughter of their lost aunt, Isabel, and their uncle Alex. " So Jay, you got the infamous Mr. Evans for Bio, I heard that he’s really fun to have. Isn’t it just the funniest thing that you share the same last name? No one has Guerin for a last name. I mean common. What kind of name is that?" Mackenzie was the typical girl, over obsessive about everything. She was the image of her mother only with dark hair and eyes. Jacey was a mixture of her aunt Isabel and her mother. Long blonde hair, brown eyes, sweet, shy voice. Her only feature that was unexplainable to her was her ears. Max on the other hand, certainly lived up to his namesake. He was the exact image of his father unbeknownst to him. He had dark hair, brown eyes, and the same stick-out ears as Jacey.
"Yeah Ken, I got Mr. Evans. I hope he’s a good teacher. I have heard that he is a bio nut."
"Well I’ve heard he’s pretty cute."
"Okay Mackenzie we’re talking about a teacher here. They are soo not cute, and besides I have Brandon and he’s all I need."
"Yeah, but Mr. Evans is cute, a little to old maybe. Have you seen Cory Studio lately? He is so looking good. He is going to take me to the spring fling only he doesn’t know it yet."
"Okay Mac you’re insane. You know that you’re only attracted to him because Josh broke up with you and Cory is his best friend. Josh will be back. He just needed a break."
"I hope so."
"Good afternoon class. I’m Coach Mike and I will be covering for Mr. Evans until he gets here in a little while. He forgot his cleats for lacrosse practice and ran home to get them. He should only be a few minutes. For those of you ladies who are on my lacrosse team, Mr. Evans will be assisting me in coaching the girl’s varsity team. So any questions?"
" Yeah how do you now so much about Mr. Evans? Are you like his keeper or something?"
" Mr. Evans is my brother. And we happen to share an apartment so I hope that explains it for you"
" Coach Mike, why is he helping now? No offense or anything it’s just like three games after our season opened. I think it’s awesome it’s just that we need a new goalie coach. Coach Marc was spiffin, we need someone to fill in his shoes." Jacey was assertive with her request. Michael always liked that in his starting goalie. She let the opposing attack know who was master.
" Well Miss, I’m hoping to do just that." A tall dark haired man stepped through the doorway. He was wearing warm-up pants, Adidas sandals, and a Hopkins’ lacrosse jersey. Not your typical teacher. " You must be infamous Jacey. Michael’s told me of your talent. Maybe you’ll be able to teach me something. Hello class. I’m Mr. Evans. You can call me coach, Evans, or Coach Evans. Whatever you chose. Thanks Mike I think I got it, see ya on the field?"
" 3:00. Don’t forget it Max, uh I mean Mr. Evans."
" Okay class, Along with the standard ‘first-day’ procedures, we are going to start our genetics unit. I want you to reflect upon your family, what traits do they have that you do too? Isabel, care to share?" The blonde haired blue- eyed beauty looked at Max with an evil look. If only he knew she thought. " Well my full name is Isabel Elizabeth-Maxine Whitman. Whitman, of course if my father’s last name. Isabel was my mother’s name, Elizabeth was after my Aunt Liz, and Maxine well that’s from my uncle Max, who gave me to my dad three hours after my birth. If I had my way I would drop his name, but dad says that if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be with him, Aunt Liz or Aunt Maria." Max listened in shellshock. His niece, Isabel’s beautiful little baby was sitting right in front of him and there was nothing he could do about it. "My dad is a computer programmer so I think that’s where I would get my technology talent. Aunt Liz is the founder and CEO of Maxwell Molecular Biology Co, so that explains where I get my love of biology. And that’s about It." She is so much like all us of Max thought. A mixture of everyone, and she doesn’t even know it. It was all that Max could do to not grab Isabel and hug her and tell her that he was her uncle. "Uh, next? Jacey how about you?" Jacey looked up from her notebook and cringed. She didn’t like to talk about her family. " Well, I’m Jacey Star Evans. My name doesn’t have that much significance; because I never met my father and he doesn’t even know I exist. I get my love of science in general from my mother, my brother Max can be accredited my love for lacrosse. Since you’re new here Coach, Max is my twin brother. My aunt can be blamed for my loquacious tendencies; Uncle Al says that I get my stubbornness from Michael and my protectiveness from my dad. Uncle Al says that I can also blame my father for my middle name. Why is beyond me, but I like it. It describes everything about me, if you think about." Isabel gave Jacey a look, which basically said that she was going to blow their cover if she didn’t shut up.
"Max slow down, you are telling me that Isabel’s baby is in Maryland? In Your class? This is bad, what if she recognizes us? What if Alex is running around here? What about Maria and Liz? Maxwell this is bad." Michael, this is not bad. Maybe it’s time for all of us to be together again. Don’t you want to see Maria? God knows I want to see Liz. I know they can’t be to upset with us. Alex named his daughter, Isabel Elizabeth Maxine. I don’t think he would have named her that if he were mad. Liz and Maria must be living in Maryland, also because Isabel spoke of them. She says that Liz is the C.E.O of Maxwell Molecular Biology Co. Remember that where I applied to before I got my B.A. Look there she is now." Max pointed to Isabel whom was waking towards the boy’s lacrosse field with Max and Mackenzie. Mackenzie suddenly felt like she was being watched, she looked over to the girl’s lacrosse field and seen the coached looking towards her. The head coach, the one with the spiky hair was so oddly familiar, but she didn’t even know his name.
Jacey was posed and ready. Center Hash free positions were her favorite things in lacrosse, especially when Max’s girlfriend, and the hardest shot on the team was her opponent. Jill fired her hardest shot, and it deflected off the center of Jacey’s helmet. Jacey crumbled to the ground. "Omigod. Coach Mike. I didn’t mean it. I didn’t mean it." Michael looked at the teary girl. She really didn’t mean to hit Jacey, but she did and it was bad. Jacey had become unconscious. " Jill isn’t her brother on the lacrosse team?" The girl nodded. " Go get him." Jill ran down the fields and right into the middle of the boy’s practice field. " Max you got to come now. Jacey’s hurt. I hit her. I didn’t mean it. She won’t get up. Please come now." Max took off running not even saying anything to his girlfriend. All he knew was that he needed to get to his sister. " Move let me in. That’s my sister." Max was scared. His sister was so strong. " Look son. I am going with your sister to the hospital. I’m coach Mike and I promise you, I’ll take good care of her. She asked if Isabel would go with us. Now I’m not sure who Isabel is so can you get her" This had never happened to Michael before. No one had ever gotten hurt on his team. Max looked at the girl lying on the ground. There was something vaguely familiar about the way her face contorted with pain, and the way she fell to the ground. It seemed like Max had seen the before but he was unable to put his finger on it.
" Daddy? Yea-yes I’m fine. You and Aunt Liz need to get to Bay View right away. Jill hit Jacey in the head with a ball, and Jacey’s unconscious. -- No, dad they weren’t fighting, it was an accident. You guys need to come soon. Max is really worried. He and Mac are following us in his car so tell Aunt Maria that she doesn’t need to pick Mac up. --Yes I think it would a good thing if Maria came too. Jacey needs her family now. --Hey Aunt Liz, um she’s drifting in and out right now. --Nope. Coach said she asked for me so that’s why I’m here. --No Max didn’t bring Jill or Brandon. I believe that he left Jill and Brandon on the field. --You want to speak to Coach Mike? Okay." Isabel handed the phone over to Michael. Michael was in disbelief. This was Liz’s daughter lying in front of him on the gurney? His star goalie was the daughter of his brother’s soul mate? Max was not going to be happy when he learns about this. " Hello. --Yes I’m Mike. --Yes I know who you are Liz. --Yes you know me, but that’s not important right now. --Yes we are pulling into Bay View now. –You’re ten minutes away? Okay. – No blood tests. Okay I understand. Isabel and I will wait for you in the waiting room. Uh Liz, you might not want to bring Maria with you. You’ll see what I mean. I have to go."
" Alex he said he knew me, and that I know him. His name is Mike, and he said not to bring Maria. I’m thinking that this man is Michael. Maria’s Michael. And if he is then he’s about to meet his daughter. And that is bad."

" Isabel! Max!" Liz walked up to her son and niece. They both wore faces of worry. "How is she? Where’s the coach?" Liz looked around she caught the sight of a dark haired man. "Michael? Is it? Omigod." Michael looked at Liz, certain that his life was going to fall apart. Max was on his way to the hospital. There was no way to talk him out of it. " Liz, concentrate. Jacey has a concussion and the doctors want to take a blood test. Is there some reason why they cant?" Liz looked at the ground. She needed to just tell Michael and hope that he wouldn’t find Max and tell him that his daughter was in the hospital. " Michael, she’s one of you. You can’t let them take her blood." Michael thought for a moment. "Liz what do you mean that she’s one of us? Are you telling me that She’s an Alien? How?" This could not mean what Michael thought it meant. "Michael she is Max’s daughter. And my son well is his son. Michael you can’t tell Max. I only told you because we can’t test her blood." Michael shook his head. This was exactly what he thought it was. " Liz, I won’t tell him, but you might have to because he’s on his way here. He is my assistant coach. Liz that’s not all Jacey is in Max’s Biology class."
Max walked through the doors to the ER. He looked ahead to his left and saw a group of kids sitting silently in the waiting area. He seen Michael, stand up and give he him a look that he wasn’t exactly sure of. He approached the corner and seen a long dark haired woman sitting in a chair next to a man with short hair that was to say, a bit muffled. " Michael how is she?" Michael was interrupted by the appearance of the doctor. " Ms. Parker. Your daughter is awake now. She has a concussion, although it is not severe, it can be dangerous. She had been calling out the name of Max while she was unconscious, and now that she is awake she is asking for her brother, I assume that he is Max?" The young man sitting next to Isabel rose and followed the doctor off down the hall. Max didn’t understand the scene before him. The woman turned and looked him and suddenly time stopped. Liz. His Liz was standing before him, after all these years. "Liz, You’re Jacey’s mother? The thought brought Max to the point of nausea. Liz had a child with some man, that wasn’t Max. " Max, can we go somewhere and talk? There is something extremely important that you need to know, and this is just not the place for me to tell you. Please Max. It can’t wait." Liz was hoping that Max would say yes. She knew that she needed to tell Max the truth, especially if Jacey was in his class and on his lacrosse team. Liz wanted Max to know, the truth be told. She awaited the day when she and he could be a family with their children. Only that day was coming sooner than she had foreseen. " Sure Liz, How about Mandy’s?"
Max sat across from Liz, and she drove her green jeep through the crowed streets of Baltimore. He looked out of his side of the car while the soft hum of Sarah McLachlan’s ‘Angel’ came out over the speakers. He couldn’t think of what Liz had to tell him. He racked his brain. And then a thought came to him. "I’m Jacey Star Evans." "I’ve never met my father and he doesn’t even know I exist." " I can blame my father for my middle name – it describes everything about me." Max admonished himself for thinking such things. There was no way that Jacey could be his daughter, or was there?
"Liz what is going on? I know I haven’t seen you for sixteen years, but is there some reason you are withdrawing from me? I can tell that something’s wrong, just tell me." Max was almost fearful of what Liz was about to tell him. " Max what I have to tell you isn’t something that I never thought I would tell you. I had only dreamed of it." Liz please just tell me. You know me, I wont think wrong of you, even after sixteen years I still love you." Liz was flooded with emotion. She also still loved Max. She shoved the feelings aside and gathered up her courage to tell Max the truth. " To answer your earlier question Max, yes Jacey is my daughter. And the young man the doctor was referring to was her twin brother, my son. They are very good kids, but they have it hard. They have no concept of what normal is. I have tried to deny it, but my children are not normal. They are special, Max. They are special just like you are." Liz held her breath waiting for Max’s response. He was clever enough to figure out what she was saying, Liz was sure of that. She had no fear that he wouldn’t figure it out she only feared his reaction. " Liz, are telling me that your children are, um not of this earth?" Max was definitely playing dumb He wanted Liz to flat out tell him what he already concluded. " Max I am telling you that your children are not of this earth" Liz stood up and Max watched her walk into the ladies room. He knew that this was hard on Liz. He completely understood, and he was grateful that Liz had told him. It wasn’t like he had a right to know; after all he hadn’t even known Liz was pregnant.
Liz walked back to the table and sat down. Her face was red, obviously were she had been crying. Max retched across the table and picked up her hand. " Liz, I am so sorry that I have not been here for any of this. If I had known then I would have stayed. I love you so much and I just wanted to keep you safe. What are we going to do?"
