*Author note: Some of these men were not born in Kentucky and some who were born there no longer resided in Kentucky when the war broke out. John Hunt Morgan was born in Alabama but had moved to Kentucky many years before the war. Albert Sidney Johnston was born in Washington, Kentucky (Mason County) but considered himself to be from Texas as did John Bell Hood.
