Biography -- Don Rightmyer



Don Rightmyer is the editor of Kentucky Ancestors, the quarterly genealogy and family history quarterly of the Kentucky Historical Society. Prior to that he was a Reference Librarian at the Kentucky Historical Society's Research Library (in Frankfort, Kentucky). Prior to that he was Reference Librarian at the Boyle County Public Library in Danville, Kentucky. He has been a lifelong student of the Civil War, holds a bachelor's degree in military history from the U.S. Air Force Academy, did extensive graduate studies in American History at the University of Kentucky, and served in both the Office of Air Force History in Washington, D.C. and was the primary Civil War book reviewer for the Army's Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Don Rightmyer began providing battlefield tours at the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site in July 2004 and he was one of the featured speakers at the 2004 and 2005 Perryville Battle Reenactment weekends. The topic of his talk was "The 1862 Campaign in Kentucky." He also spoke on that topic for the 2nd Annual (2005) Central Kentucky Civil War Heritage Trail activities at Perryville on July 18, 2005. Mr. Rightmyer also presented an hour-long talk to attendees at the Civil War Preservation Trust 3-day seminar in early August 2005. His topic was "Resources for Teachers on the Civil War in Kentucky.

Don Rightmyer is nearing completion of a book-length history on the Civil War in Kentucky. This website and the sister site, The Civil War in Kentucky, are based largely on research done for this book and his nearly 40 years of Civil War research and reading.
