Larry and Andy Wachowski Matrix is
Star Wars’ cooler older brother. Marking the return of action dude Keanu
Reeves to the film world, The Matrix sees him play a computer hacker Neo, a
loner contacted by the mysterious Morpheus (Fishburne), who says he is ‘the
one’. It turns out the Matrix is a piece of software that fools all of Mankind
at about 2199 into thinking they are living two thousand years before. The truth
is that robotic squid like creatures have taken over us, sucking our energy to
make the Matrix. Rogue escapee Morpheus, plus lots of followers that include the
beautiful Trinity (Moss), are out to free mankind, but only ‘the one’ will
be able to finish the task and beat the agents (led by a fierce some Weaving)
that patrol the Matrix and try to clamp down on this type of activity. If all this
sounds a bit confusing, the Wachowskis keep your attention with a series of
mind-boggling stunts and effects. Shot like a computer game, the visual aspect
of the film is very unique. Bringing
together state of the art with the old-fashioned leads to a curious but
successful mix. Although some way behind what surrounds Blade Runner, the
Wachowskis stay very original in their thinking. The plot still intrigues until
the end. All the cast are capable but Moss, both sexy and startling, stands-out
of the crowd. Refreshing in a year of tired sequel, The Matrix does what it sets
to do: kick ass. Rating: 4
