Neon Genesis Evangelion: The year is 2015; 15 years ago there was a supposed (and mysterious) meteorite crash in Antarctica that wipes out roughly half the human population. Now NERV, a special agency (and mankind's last hope for survival) is waging a deadly war:the awe-inspiring Evangelions vs. the mysterious alien beings known only as Angels (Shito). There are a few weary individuals at NERV who are struggling to uncover and piece together the agency's long buried secrets and hidden agendas along with the mysteries surrounding the arrival of the Angels. Why was the Earth struck fifteen years ago? Was it merely an unfortunate act of nature, or was it an act of vengeance instigated by beings more powerful than man. Why did NERV classify the Angel responsible for the first attack on Tokyo-3 as the third, not the first? And just why are the only qualified Eva pilots that of children born exactly nine months after the second impact that massacred over half the human race? this information was gathered here: http://www.lwhy.clara.net/nge/
The three main pilots for the EVAs are Ayanami Rei (the 1st child), Soryu Asuka (the 2nd child,) Ikari Shinji (the 3rd child), {names written family name first}, and they pilot EVA-00/Unit 00, EVA-01/Unit 01, and EVA-02/Unit 02 respectfully. Eva-01 sees far more action than the other EVAs, and it is also the most unpredictable. On several occasions Unit 01 has moved without energy being supplied to it and is quoted by Ritsuko to be a berserker.
This Eva's rogue behaviour is the reason many of the Angels were successfully destroyed, and its pilot is still alive to tell the tale. Unit 01 is also different from the other Evas in that it wasn't built from Adam, but from Lilith. Adam is the source of everything since the second impact and the reason NERV, SEELE (the committee that knows and controls everything and is the one responsible for the cover-up of the truth during the Second Impact, the activities of NERV and the Evangelion project) and the Evangelions exist; if another Angel units with Adam, the whole human race will be destroyed so it's up to the EVAs to stop this from happening. Lilith can be considered "the first Angel." Lilith is nailed to a cross, and the SEELE logo has the seven eyes of Lilith. As you can see, this wonderful anime has much symbolism (and I've just touched on it)!
X, or X/1999 as it is known in the US, is Clamp's latest and greatest manga release in a long line of memorable and unique manga. Within the series are fragments of Western superstition, along with traditional Japanese and exotic Indian folklore. Clamp blends truth and reality so well in this particular series that one almost believes that the story could indeed be possible. In addition, X has recently been made into an anime movie. X can mean a cross for crucification or an unknown in an equation. In Japan, X is also the name of a narcotic. The title of the manga series, X, is supposed to be a combination of all three of these meanings. The 1999 portion of X/1999 stands for the year which the end of the world supposedly will occur in the manga and was added for Chinese and English translations of the manga.
X is set in the near future; it is the beginning of the end of the world. Two dreamwalkers have forseen the coming of the Dragon of Earth and the Dragon of Heaven. The two spirtual forces must battle for the fate of the earth. If the Dragon of Heaven is victorious, the world remains the same. If the Dragon of Earth prevails, the world is shattered, and all is changed. For centuries, the two dragons have slept, each bound in another realm by the power of kekkai (spiritual seals). However, the seals are being destroyed. An ancient legend states that seven Seals and seven Minions will arise to do battle for the fate of the world. The Seven Seals will summon the Dragon of Heaven, and preserve the kekkai binding the Dragon of Earth. The Seven Minions will detroy the kekkai, freeing the Dragon of Earth, and destroying the world. The Seven Seals and the Seven Minions are scattered throughout Japan. Other powerful forces sense the coming change and rally their forces. The two dreamwalkers take opposite sides and begin gathering the Seals and the Minions for the final confrontation, when the twin dragons will awaken to mortal kombat. There is one small problem though. One of the Seven Seals is also one of the Seven Minions. He has been blessed with powers undreamt of by either side. For this one man, the rules no longer apply. He has been given the choice between the preservation and destruction of the world. Whichever side recruits him first may win the war. His name is Kamui, and he doesn't care what happens either way...
The name "Kamui" can be read in two ways : 1) One who represents the majesty of God. 2) One who hunts the majesty of God. If Kamui chooses to be a Seal, he represents the majesty of God : The Seven Seals. However, if Kamui chooses to become a Minion, he is one who will hunt the majesty of God (the Seals) and destroy them.
