Sept 28, 2000 Former MB pleads guilty to assault charges, fined RM1,000 K Kabilan 7.40pm, THURS: In a surprising turn of events, former Kedah Mentri Besar Sanusi Junid today pleaded guilty to two charges of causing hurt to two Kuala Lumpur International Airport employees. Sanusi was fined RM500 or one month's jail for each charge by the Sepang magistrate's court at 3pm today. Sanusi, who is Umno state assemblyman of Kuah, was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to Shaiful Abdul Rahman and Mohd Nazri Ishak at Gate A2 KLIA on May 5 at about 12.40am. The former agricultural minister was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries the maximum jail sentence of one year or a fine of RM2,000, or both. Sanusi, in mitigation, said he had hit the two KLIA staff for being slow in bringing a wheelchair for his aged and frail aunt who had arrived from Singapore. He said he became angry over the delay as his aunt was suffering in pain. He added that his aunt, who died recently, advised him to settle the case amicably. He was to have been formally charged before magistrate Kamal Bahrain Omar over the offences on Oct 3 after the case against him was postponed on Aug 22 following an application by Sanusi's counsel Shahul Hameed Amiruddin. Shahul had submitted a medical certificate from Charles Gomez Ear, Nose and Throat clinic which excused Sanusi from attending the court hearing as he was suffering from "vertigo with tinnitus". (It is a condition of the ear which causes pain and ringing noises, resulting in a loss of balance in the person.) Sanusi was exempted by Dr Andrew Charles Gomez from attending the hearing from Aug 18 to 25. Deputy Public Prosecutor Hanafiah Zakaria had not objected to the adjournment. |
