SWING IN MALAY VOTES TO OPPOSITION, SAYS SULEIMAN

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Federal Territory BN chairman Datuk Dr Suleiman Mohamed said his victory in the Titiwangsa parliamentary seat was not as comfortable as previously because many Malay votes went to the opposition this time.

However, non-Malay voters particularly Chinese were still firmly behind the BN, he said.

He beat PAS candidate Mohamad Noor Mohamad by a majority of 1,513 votes, a far cry compared to the 18,966-vote majority in the 1995 election.

However, he said a victory remained a victory no matter how close the contest was.

"Although the majority is not high, the important thing is victory," he told reporters at the BN operations room in Desa Pandan here.

He said the performance of BN candidates in the Federal Territory did not change much from the last election.

Meanwhile, DAP's Dr Tan Seng Giaw won the Kepong parliamentary seat for a fifth time when he beat BN's Ma Woei Chyi, 28, and independent candidate L.Manoharan, 43.

Dr Tan won by a majority of 1,766. He polled 25,085 votes compared to 23,319 by Ma and 1,033 by Manoharan.

In the 1995 election, Dr Tan won by a 5,022-vote majority.
