Group out to undermine Maznah, says Adnan
KUANTAN March 29 - The action of all 11 Wanita UMNO division chiefs in Pahang in seeking the removal of State Wanita UMNO head Maznah Mazlan is guided by their own personal interests, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

He said the group was eyeing positions in administration.

"It is straight forward ... when there is no confidence in Maznah, someone else will become the state Wanita UMNO head. And, if that someone is an elected representative, she will want to replace Maznah in the State Executive Council," he said here today.

Maznah, the state Culture, Arts, Tourism and Women's Affairs Committee chairman, is not a Wanita UMNO division chief.

Adnan was asked to comment on the two memorandoms sent by the group, one to UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the other to Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

In the memorandum, the group stated it no longer have confidence in Maznah's leadership pertaining to the distribution of grants to the Women's Affairs Consultative Committee (Hawa) at the district level.

Adnan, who is the Pahang UMNO liaison committee chairman, said the issue arose because certain parties were eyeing positions such as state Wanita UMNO head, state exco member and state Hawa chairman apart from laying hands on the allocation for Hawa.

He said the no confidence motion was not reached in a meeting held, either a special delegates meeting or a special committee meeting.

"Instead, it was only signed by those involved," he said.

"For a no confidence motion to be carried, each division must call for a meeting of every branch on the matter."

Adnan said matters came to a head after Maznah, who is the Pahang Hawa chairman, refused to allocate RM30,000 to Hawa in each district on concerns that the money would be used by many of the Wanita UMNO division chiefs to campaign in the party's divisional elections.

"I will call for a meeting with all the Wanita UMNO division chiefs concerned soon," he said.

Sabah Wanita Umno bans observers from meetings

By Muguntan Vanar
KOTA KINABALU: A directive was issued yesterday to all Sabah Wanita Umno divisions to bar observers from attending their meetings after Monday's fracas at Libaran Umno division.

Sabah Wanita Umno head Datuk Dayang Mahani Tun Raffae said a circular had been sent to stop outside observers from disrupting Wanita meetings.

"We are worried. When emotions run high during a contest, the situation gets worse when outside supporters get involved,'' she said in a telehone interview.

Mahani said observers at Wanita meetings would only be allowed for opening ceremonies, adding that the Libaran Wanita fracas was caused by outsiders.

She believed intense campaigning for the post of Libaran division chairman by supporters of incumbent state Finance Minister Datuk Musa Aman and assembly Speaker Datuk Hassan Alban Sandukong could have caused the meeting to turn ugly.

Yesterday, another police report was lodged by Umno Youth exco member Sahar Sakar, who named three people and blamed them for the commotion at the meeting.
