a function of who we are when we see them Mary Schmich |

One of my minor goals of attending A-Kon 15 was to view samples of some anime in which I was vaguely interested to get some ideas for my future viewing list.
Anime conventions generally run around-the-clock screenings. Now I didn't want to spent 2 days in a dark room, but I wanted to watch a bit.
There turned out to be an abundance of stuff to watch and the time did come when I partook, but in retrospect maybe I should have looked harder for more unique activities.
This series is spoken of highly. It has a great pedigree including music by Youko Kanno. I didn't much like the movie, and I'm not fond of robots. Given that the series has launched a 2nd season, my decision was to wait until that season was finished before taking action, or not.
I watched episode 1. It was a class production with the expected small snatches of the Kanno music I know and love so well. You can't buy a series for the music. Get the OST.
It had a good plot with a twist at the end and some humor. There was a great image of android geisha entangling fat businessmen hostages.
My conclusion: unchanged. Wait until it's finished.
This is reputedly a dark series. Characters by Yoshitoshi Abe, one of my favorites. It's short and didn't seem to be about anything. I had decided to pass.
I watched the 1st 3 episodes of this. It was very dark indeed. In the 1st episode, a gang cuts off the hero's arm with a sword. In the 2nd episode, he charges them and they cut off his leg. In the 3rd episode, he crawls off through the sewer and then things start to go really bad for him. The female lead wears a cat mask and never speaks.
It was so dark that the sound quit in the middle, and it was a good 5 minutes before we were sure that it wasn't just the style of the show.
It still doesn't seem to be about anything, but I like the art, the sound, and the style of presentation.
My conclusion: changed. I think I will pick this up on my next shopping trip.
But I should have looked for other things to do than watch anime.
