Chronic head pain or headache is one of the most common complains nowadays. Many patients with such problem try several lines of treatments in different medical fields .Such lines of treatment in most of cases will either fail to reach healing or end up by more sever drug side effect .

According to a research conducted by Dr.Ossama Sweedan at the faculty of dentistry-Alexandria university , Many cases of headache develop as a result of improper occlusion (improper relation between upper and lower teeth).

Improper occlusion may develop because of improper dental treatment like having high tooth filling or may develop without dental interference because of eruption of teeth in improper position.

When there is improper occlusion a tooth or a group of teeth will be subjected  to more pressure than the other teeth because it comes in contact first with the teeth of the opposing jaw. If this situation continued those teeth with time will become loose and finally get lost.

Fortunately there is a protective mechanism that will prevent this from happening. this mechanism goes as follow , when the nerve endings surrounding the tooth in high contact feel the greater pressure on it. it will send impulses to the brain which in return will cause the muscles of mastication  to contract and direct the lower jaw into a new position where pressure will be distributed on a larger number of teeth.

But this mechanism will not pass without side effects. This continuous contraction of the mastication muscle will result in the development of continuous pain within these muscles. Take in consideration that the muscles of mastication cover almost the entire side of your head. That's why such a pain will be felt as a headache.

IN Dr.Ossama Sweedan dental clinic such cases are treated by inserting an appliance inside the mouth which is called splint. This splint will restore the normal relation between the upper and lower teeth. this will relief the muscle pain and thus your headache. By the end of the treatment plan the teeth will be adjusted to get into balanced occlusion and so there will be no need for the splint any more.

Many cases of such a problem were treated in this manner with very high success rate.
