Information about Mirage Door Systems, Inc. and Mirage Door Systems West

Hermel Cloutier is owner and CEO of MDS,Inc. located in Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Hermel has been in the garage door business for 34 years and is well known in the door industry for his achievements in developing and designing door systems. He invented and developed the counter balance system for large rolling steel doors for Raynor Garage Door Company well as the Hermco Counter Weight System which is distributed world wide. He also has invented, developed and built underground door systems that have gone over 1,000,0000 cycles and are still currently in use. Additionally he has many other inventions in the industry.

If difficult situations are encountered where special door needs have to be designed and developed, Hermel is a leader in solving these problems. Among some interesting doors is a 100' X 20' vertical lifting doors with no twisting or sagging problems. Another is a downward acting automotive door in Texas where no headroom above was available.

David Ostler from Provo, Utah, has a degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology from Brigham Young University. He has been working with garage doors for 13 years and will be operating MDSW in Provo. The Provo plant will manufacture the Underground Parking Door Systems to be shipped to door companies in the Western United States. Eventually this plant will be manufacturing and shipping to other States and locations. The large High Cycle Usage doors will be designed and manufactured in the Ontario plant to be shipped throughout Canada, the States, Latin America, and Overseas.

It must be noted that Mirage Doors will be sold wholesale only to Garage Door Companies who are properly licensed and insured. Each door company must have the capability of installing and maintaining these types of doors as each door carries a 5 year / 500,000cycle warrantee. The door company that sells and installs these doors must be able to service and maintain each door throughout this period of time and into the future. Life expectancy of underground parking doors can well exceed 1.5 to 2 million cycles with proper maintenance.

Unique features about the Mirage Door Systems

Underground Parking Garages

Mirage Underground Parking Door Systems have many unique features that set them apart from all other types of door systems currently being used for underground parking projects ( steel sectional doors, rolling curtains, rolling grills, etc.). The Mirage UPDS does not use door springs, drums, cables, torsion spring shafts, shaft bearings, etc., all of which are problematic with high maintenance. The other conventional door systems also require substantial headroom. Since headroom is usually very critical in underground parking, the Mirage UPDS stands out because it requires only 6'' total headroom to include the electric operator.

Another key feature about Mirage UPDS, it operates with a dual system so that if one should fail the other will prevail. If the electricity goes off, the quick release can be pulled and the door can be manually cranked open in 30 seconds by effortlessly turning a crank on the motor head. To help understand the ease and effortless operation of the Mirage UPDS, it only requires between .2 -.3 amps draw on the motor to raise or lower the door, thus no heavy loading is ever put on the motor or drive mechanism.

The Mirage UPDS is set up with reversing if an obstruction is encountered in the downward operation. It is highly recommended, though, that additional safety devices be added to this door (electric safety edges, motion detectors, photo cells) which are to be furnished and installed by the company that sells and installs the door. The operator will accept all makes of devices. Many States and locations now require that commercial doors be equipped with these safety devices. Key/keyless entry systems, card readers, key lockout, etc. can be added to this system as the customer requires. The Mirage UPDS is designed to fill the many differing needs for high cycle, heavy use underground as well as above ground parking garages.

Mirage UPDS is aluminum construction and is designed for the varying climatic conditions around the world. Where higher security requirements are needed, systems can be built to fulfill these needs. Every door is custom built for each specified application and job.

Version 1: This door is all aluminum framed with polycarbonate lenses between the framing. This system is excellent where some insulation requirements are needed but also the lumens from outside natural lighting help light up underground parking areas. The lenses are obscure so light can pass through but not vision. The doors are standard aluminum in color with clear polycarbonate lenses. They can be manufactured in several different powder coated colors or in bronze anodized framing with bronze tinted polycarbonate lenses. These doors work well in inner city operations as well as in underground parking for hotels and ski resorts, apartments, etc.

Version 2: Where climatic conditions are more harsh and cold, this all aluminum fully insulated door system fills the need very well. The doors can be built either 2" or 3" thick depending on the insulation requirements. They can be manufactured even thicker where extreme cold and windy conditions exist. Since they are aluminum structure, excess weight in large doors isn't a problem.

Version 3: In moderate to warm climate areas the Aluminum Grill is the system of choice. The vertical pickets are 4" apart and the door is very light yet very strong and secure. Where high security or high crime area is the problem, this door can be built so rigidly that forced entry would be extremely difficult short of ramming a vehicle through it. Even then, this door system is built such that it will not disintegrate as do conventional sectional doors or rolling grills.

Version 4: Special engineering is sometimes required to develop a door system that will be able to work in a very unlikely opening with difficult parameters. Mirage will design, engineer and build to these sometimes very difficult situations, a door system that will work. Many underground parking projects are left without the safety and security of a door system because there hasn't been a system that would work. Mirage Door Systems would appreciate the opportunity to work in solving this problem

Mirage High Cycle Large Door Systems

Mirage High Cycle Large Door Systems are designed for those difficult jobs where high cycle door usage is required and where down time from broken springs, thrown cables, etc. cannot be tolerated. The Mirage HCLDS is also covered by the 5 year / 500,000cycles full warrantee the same as the Mirage UPDS. With this system the need for high maintenance costs and demands along with continual customer frustration caused by inoperable conventional doors is eliminated. They are designed to effortlessly operate 200 - 400+ times per day with minimal maintenance.

An important safety feature with the Mirage HCLDS is if the electricity should go off or if the operator internally malfunctions, the door will not come slamming down as occurs with broken springs on sectional doors or rolling doors and grills. Nor will the door go cockeyed or crooked in the track due to one cable breaking or coming off the drum.

On large doors (eg. 28' X 20') Mirage HCLDS uses a counter balance system in conjunction with the Mirage System. Even then, the door can be safely operated manually until the operator is repaired. Mirage doors will go up and they will come down!

If a section should get damaged due to a fork lift or truck crashing through it, the door can almost always be made operable while waiting for a new section to be built and sent out. Since each section is approximately 4' high and is rigidly built, a damaged section can be cross braced, back braced, or whatever is required to get the section relatively straight. The door can then be operated and the building or parking area can be secured. This isn't always the case with other type doors as the corners are constantly being pulled up by the spring's tension on the cable or the barrel. When a Mirage Door is down or up there is no stress pulling or tugging on the door.

Service is paramount and usually within one day from the time that Mirage receives the order for replacement components, these replacement sections and related damaged hardware will be made and shipped out. Doors damaged due to accidents, abuse, and/or related situations are of course not covered by warrantee.

Lease option for all Mirage Door Systems

Vehicles, office equipment, construction equipment, phone systems, buildings, and more are leased. There has never been a garage door lease until now. All Mirage Door Systems can be leased throughout Canada and the USA. It is quite a unique idea and it makes it possible to have Mirage Door Systems without having a large cash outlay up front. Places like hotels, apartment complexes, and related type businesses use this option to lease and work the payment into their monthly expenses. The lease can go for up to 5 years at which time the door then becomes a permanent part of the structure.

Updates will be frequently added to this web site. Diagrams of systems will be on shortly, along with the complete Sweets catalogue for the Architects. Videos will also soon be available.
