Shortly after
an unplanned C-section, Kyle rests in Shanna's arms. At this point, Kyle
had been cleaned up a little and Shanna had returned to her room from the
OR. |

|
 |
Still in
Shanna's recovery room, Kyle has his eyes protected from infection. He is
only a couple of hours old. At birth, he weighed 7 pounds, 6.4 ounces and
measured 19-3/4 inches long. |
|
Kyle starts to open his
eyes as Aunt Alana admirers her new nephew. Grandparents Butch and Linda
also made the trip to Katy to welcome him to the world. |
 |
|
 |
Just a
couple hours old, the nurse who had been giving Kyle a thorough cleaning,
came to Shanna's room and delivered some very unnerving news. Kyle was
going to be kept in the NICU because his breathing had become very
accelerated. She wanted to keep him monitored until the doctor could check
him out. |
|
The doctor agreed that Kyle
needed constant care. Kyle spent the first week of life in the NICU hooked
up to various monitors. Although no one even hinted this would be life
threatening, the new mom and dad were worried about their new son. |
 |
|
 |
It would
be nearly two days before we were even allowed to hold him again. Those
were two of the roughest days of our lives. By this time, first-time
grandparents Tommy and Sally had been in town for a day or so to see their
very first grandchild. |
|
Once his breathing
stabilized, Kyle's jaundice had become a big enough problem that he needed
to be under the lights 24 hours a day. We were only able to hold him at
feeding times every couple of hours. |

Holding
Daddy's finger did more to comfort Dad than son. |
