The RAC Rally…Again

The visit to the RAC rally at Chatsworth in Derbyshire proved to be a bit of an adventure most years, as it always see to mark the first snow of the year (pevious visit see RAC/Turbo 90)

Tricky hill - Eweden bank

On another visit to Chatsworth with my cycling mate Grimey (AKA Ian Grimes), in the days when the RAC rally did come north, it started snowing again. On leaving the event, again, the roads were white over. By now I was more familiar with the ability of Land Rovers in the white stuff and decided on a more challenging route home, Ian wasn't quite as enthused about my choice of route… from Bamford towards Sheffield on the A57 and take the first left over the Strines road which follows the edge of Kinder Scout to Langsett at the end of the Woodhead Pass and from there towards Pennistone and up onto Royd Moor above Holmfirth and into Denby Dale. The Strines road was white over with snow and presented a few challenges as it has a number of steep little valleys where the road drops at 1in6 then climbs steep up the hill at the other side. The Range Rover made light work of this, the tricky parts were the descents as the Range Rover didn’t have the same level of engine braking as my previous diesel Landies, but it wasn’t a big problem. The most impressive point was when we got to Ewden Bank. This is 1in6 down, 180 turn over a bridge and then the hill kicks off immediately with a 1in4 climb around a second 180 turn then it eases off to 1in8 until a final 1in4 kick at the top. The snow wasn’t as thick here as the dense trees sheltered the road but it was still slippy but the Range Rover made it look easy. You could feel each axle hunting for traction and the car slewing around a bit, but we never looked like loosing forward motion. Once around the steep corners at the bottom the Range Rover romped up the rest of the hill. Once over to Penistone the snow had cleared up, so a dull drive the rest of the way :-(
