Thought I would share a story with those who might appreciate it....
I decided to have my boat hauled before leaving on a quick sail trip
with my kids. It's their spring break next week (4/14-18) and I
wanted to change out my prop and clean my bottom before leaving. I
had finished those jobs as well as touch up some bottom paint and
went to the office to pay the bill. John, the manager was on the
phone so I putzed around the office waiting for him to finish. I
glanced at the many clip boards on the wall with the names of all the
boats and their owners. I saw a name I recognized as the author
of "The Gentleman's Guide to Passages South", Bruce Van Sant. I
wondered, How many Bruce Van Sants' can there be in this world? I
paid my bill and left the office when I ran into one of the yard
workers and asked him if he knew Bruce and who he was. He said he
didn't know anything about being an author but that I should ask
because here he comes. Sure enough, when asked, he said "You found
me". He invited me aboard his boat "Tidak Apa" (never mind - it
doesn't make any difference) where we chatted so long that I forgot
that my boat was being lowered into the water. It was time to go. I
did buy the most recent copy of his book, the seventh edition, which
had been part of a few he had with him. Of course, I figured I'd have
him sign it and he happily agreed. He was very cordial and down to
earth as was his wife Rosa. I enjoyed the chat, what a wealth of
knowledge and experience. Check out his bio at www.cruisingguides.com
and look at "meet the authors". I found it very interesting.
