Shah had stopped walking. His hands had fallen to his sides. He had fallen into a reverie, which was a mirror image of the woman's own quiet seclusion. The voices of his companions were indistinguishable from the murmur of the pool's fountain. Shah heard nothing and saw nothing, but this one beauty who, in an instant, had captured his heart. When she took her hand from the water's surface, she looked directly into Shah's eyes, as if she had been aware of his gaze for a very long time, but had only chosen to acknowledge it at that moment. Oh! That look!

woman's side. All of his life, Shah had been a hunter, and now, he felt his prey could slip between his fingers. He could not let that happen, not at any price. Though the harem ladies were murmuring in shock, Shah walked directly to the Qajar Princess. He would never let his prey vanish so easily again, especially not when the hunt was for something so precious, so beautiful.

Afraid of the consequences of pushing aside all tradition, Mahd-Ulya pleaded, "Your Majesty, please, I can bring her to you. She will kiss your hand." Shah dismissed his mother with an angry gesture, "No!" he said, "It will not be necessary. Simply leave us alone."

Dr. Farmun emphasized that he didn't think Dr. Polak had anything in particular against Ziba, or that he had abandoned their hopes because he had been made Shah's personal physician, but, he told her, the longer Ziba's illness continued, the greater the chance Shah would forget about her. Dr. Polak had said, "I know you are a countryman of mine, and cannot live in Shah's Harem. I do not know what the outcome will be, but I hope that all three of us will be safe and sound."

As soon as the shadow of the majestic, appealing, dignified, formidable castle fell over their carriage, Ziba was stunned by its beauty and glorified greatness, how the mystic castle of Qajar appeared to hold up the sky. The great walls surrounding it sent shivers through her spine. She turned towards her father and asked, "Is this my new prison? Did you sell me for anything worthwhile? Was it in exchange for commanding this castle?" Sayf-Al-Molk looked at his daughter with an innocent and penetrating gaze. He was silent and his eyes were watery. Two tears appeared in the corners of his eyes. He closed his eyes and let the tears course down his cheeks. Ziba felt the sting of her own words in her father's heart, opened her arms to him, and kissed his tears away, until she too, was in tears. When Sayf-Al-Molk was able to talk, he said, "I regret bringing you here. I wanted you to see the world. I understand and sense your grand ambitions, and hope I will be able to fulfill them. My second mistake was introducing you to Mahd-Ulya. I wanted you to see the grandeur of the Kingdom, which, at your age, would be very

Though simple, the triangle opening of its colour would give a beautiful appearance to her chest and extremely narrow waist. Her high-heeled shoes would make her figure seem even more striking. She would wear very natural make-up, and her golden curly hair would fall over her long neck and drape over her rounded naked shoulders. Her face would be full of joy, happy, receptive, warm and cuddly. Her eyes would be inviting and penetrating at once, as she very formally received Dr. Farmun, like a Queen. In reply to his inquiries into her health, she would simply give him a meaningful look.

Ziba began to dress and get ready for horseback riding. Farmun opened the bedroom door a crack. Seeing that the corridor was empty, he slipped into his own bedroom, getting ready. The two met downstairs for breakfast. An hour later, Ziba asked Sima to join them as they hunted. She didn’t want any of the castle guards’ thoughts given over to suspicion, and didn’t dare leave for an afternoon’s ride with Farmun alone. When they had left the castle far behind, Sima kept her distance. She spoke with the guard who watched the party from a distance. Farmun rode his horse close to Ziba’s, took her hands and felt Ziba’s joy at the hunt. Ziba drove her horse into a canter, putting some distance between them, and smiling, teasingly. Farmun spurred his horse after her, unting Ziba. It was afternoon before the two of them stopped next to a tree. The autumn sun beat down on the hilly expanse, and the small stream that coursed next to them sparkled as if with

50: SHAH’S HUNT, DAY AND NIGHT

Early in the summer, Shah found himself under a lot of pressure to resolve the problems in Herrat. After weeks of continuus meetings in which he received representatives, Shah was exhausted. There seemed to be no solution in sight, unless he accepted defeat, and defeat was not something Shah could easily accept. He’d simply wanted to get away, to recuperate and clear his mind, the unnatural heat of the spring was not helping his mood.

He was so upset he immediately went to sleep. Between Tsaritsin and Moscow there was nothing for Verdi, he woke, ate and slept, only to go through the cycle again. Sometimes Verdi stared through the window. In the women’s car, they closed the curtains. The women were not even allowed to look outside. Verdi slept most of the time.

Verdi was familiar with his cousin’s feelings, he knew Shah’s vulnerabilities, what saddened him, what brought about his utmost anger, and what filled him with joy. After a long silence, Verdi began to speak, with fear and reservation.

VERDI WAS STUNNED BY THE ROUNDED DOMES OF HER PERFECTLY SHAPED BREASTS. HE COULDN’T MOVE. NATASHA GLIMPSED HIM IN THE MIRROR. SHE RAN TO THE SIDE AND QUICKLY TRIED TO COVER HERSELF WITH HER DRESS.

4: THE BITTER-SWEET TASTE OF REVENGE

The train of Shah’s Harem had left Moscow hours ago. Like wounded animals, crawling through the darkness, the women dragged their defeated bodies and downcast souls towards the borders of Persia. The monotonous grinding of cold iron scratched at their ears as the train skulked away from Moscow. They were furious and embittered, and had been rejected not only by Europe, but had been discarded by Shah, their husband, who’d chosen to remain in a Europe which had cast them out. Each of the women felt anger to the core. A heavy silence fell over the train, as if it were carrying corpses. The cars which carried the ladies, eunuchs and members of Shah’s party, were under the supervision of Imam Jum,a, the chief Clergy of the harem, who’d himself married one of the ex-Shah’s wives. He was a reliable man, considered trustworthy enough to see the harem through the Persian border.

Verdi didn’t realize the time, he had completely lost contact with the world. When his eunuch knocked on the door, and brought the two girls in, Verdi was fully awake. Verdi gathered Shah was ecstatically happy. He had not thought Verdi and his eunuchs would be able to sneak the girls into his room through the servant’s quarters. On his way out, the eunuch told Verdi, “Shah wants these girls again tomorrow night, and every night there after, if I presume

On the 20th of June, 1873, after a one-hour journey by train, Shah arrived at Windsor Castle, the residence of Her Most Exalted Majesty, the Queen of England, on the 36th anniversary of her reign. The Prime Minister, Lord Morley, and Shah, passed through crowds which pressed up against either side of the road, threatening to swallow their carriage. They passed through High Park and entered Windsor Palace’s rose garden. On the Palace steps, Shah was welcomed by Her Majesty, the Queen.

different. He wanted to breath fresh air, walking the streets of Paris, before visiting the ballet studio, where he wanted to once more, watch the girls change and shower. Later, he watched them rehearse and chatted with the ballerinas, getting to know them. Each night, he invited a few of the ballerinas to join him as he visited Paris’ best theatres and shows.

            Two nights before Nicole’s private fashion show, she asked Verdi to come for a preview, so he could give her suggestions. Nicole had had a great deal of publicity surrounding Shah’s trip to Paris, and his visits to her ballet and fashion shows. She wanted to get the most out of it for her school and her fashion show. Nicole hoped the show would give her the opportunity to open her own maison, and move ahead of the other maisons in Paris. She was ecstatic, and rode the crest of success with grace. The money she made on the ballet recital was not a trifling sum, and the show had garnered critical acclaim. There were plans in the works to put the show on weekly, as demand for tickets were still high. Verdi encouraged her in her dreams, and wanted to be part of her ambitious endeavors. Nicole sat next to Verdi in her ballet studio. They sat alone in the front row of the audience before the fashion rehearsal. Nicole turned to Verdi and said thoughtfully,

The previous week, he had had the luck to search out ghosts for Sima, who always sat next to Neggine and appeared to be her best friend.

Seyyad laid Sima down on her bed in the dimly lit room after she invited him to her apartment and he guided her to his paradise, telling her about all of the angels. He had tried to get one of the angels to enter her body, but found it impossible, as they had all fled from Sima. He told her it was because there was a ghostly-devil lodged somewhere in her body, which frightened the angels away. In order to make it possible for her to host an angel, Seyyad told her he would have to exorcise the ghost, freeing her up. He went through his ritual exorcism, guiding her, with his words, to a bridge between the two worlds, as his hands searched out the devil lodged in her body. Once he had found the devil, she could simply drop it over the side of the bridge, where it would fall into hell and burn.

Before resting, Seyyad covered Neggine, and told her, “I would like you to enter a deep sleep. I will come back soon to see if your luck has stayed open.” Seyyad entered Sima’s room, and laid down beside her, and said, “I want to be sure no evil has entered you.” It didn’t take him too long to discover there was no evil inside of her, as he probed her long enough. She rested peacefully. That night, Seyyad had a much more wonderful time than ever before, slipping back and forth between Neggine and Sima’s arms. He made sure Neggine’s luck was kept open to the future by keeping his key in her lock just long enough for her to have the full joy and checking Sima repeatedly, making sure no devil had entered her body.

It was dawn before he left the harem after promising the girls to help them to reach their ‘goals’ with weekly visits with his instrumental help. When the guards stopped him, he gave the password provided to him by the eunuchs, “Shab-Aahang”.

Meanwhile, Shah continued his tour of Italy. He enjoyed the sites, and was very interested in the architecture. Victor Emmanuel II, the heir apparent, and the other officials of the Italian government, took Shah to various historical sites.

Shah left Salzburg and arrived in Austria on Monday July 28th, where he was received by the local authorities. His train passed through a series of cities, Treviglio, Bargamo, and Brescia, before he finally arrived in Verona. The Principle Chamberlain of the Emperor, a military officer who spoke Persian fluently, greeted Shah upon his arrival.

            On Tuesday July 29th, Shah left Bavaria for Vienna, the capital of Austria. At sunset, Shah arrived at Penzing train station, where he was received by His Most Exalted Majesty, the Emperor of Austria, in the company of the Nawwab, the heir-apparent, and the Prince and Princess.

On Thursday, the 31rst of July, His Majesty had an audience with Dr. Pollak. Shah saw a beautiful woman in Dr. Pollak’s company, but was unable to place her. Dr. Pollak introduced her as Princess Ziba, before introducing her husband, Dr. Farman, and their son, Nader. Shah looked into Ziba’s eyes with astonishment. He immediately recalled his great love for her. His heart filled with desire and passion. Verdi had been away for a week, only intensifying Shah’s desperation for some form of connection. Shah not only missed his cousin for the sake of Verdi’s conversation, but as a result of Verdi’s absence, hadn’t had the company of a woman in seven days. Shah greeted Princess Ziba, and she told him she was extremely happy to see him, saying, “You are an extremely distinguished friend. My life in Austria has been very happy. I am content. I work with my husband and enjoy raising my son. He wants to go into medicine, just like his father.” Shah wanted to know if she would return to Persia for a visit, and Princess Ziba politely replied, “I do not see an opportunity for a visit in the immediate future.” Shah felt very introspective and examined his own feelings. He still had a tremendous desire to capture her. She was probably the only woman he had loved so much, and never possessed. Princess Ziba shook hands with Shah, and excused herself. Shah watched until she had disappeared from him, once more.

Two nights later, the Ballet was premiered in the presence of His Majesty, the Shah of Persia. After the performance, the audience clapped and cheered enthusiastically. The early editions would hail the performance as “breathtaking and elliptical.” All of the reviews were good. That night, Nicole introduced Bina (eyesight) to Shah. Shah, knowing who she was, and her importance, paid a great deal of attention to her. He hoped to see more of her.

2: A GLAMOROUS RECEPTION IN TURKEY

On the 9th of August, 1873, Qabuli-Pasha, the Ottoman Emperor’s ambassador to Austria, was received by Shah. After the formalities were dispensed with Qabuli told Shah, “My government has instructed me to accompany His Majesty to the Port of Brindisi.” They would traverse the territory of Bavaria, taking a large steamship along the Danube river, arriving the next day in Bologna, Italy. From there, they had arrive next at the Port of Brindisi where the Ottoman government vessels would convey Shah and his companions to Constantinople. Shah and his companions were content to be coming close to their homeland, and saying in a place in which the social mores and customs were familiar. They were all a little homesick. Shah was happy to have his meals prepared by the Sultan’s cook, and immediately felt at home, speaking Turkish. On the 16th of August, Shah passed by the islands, setting down on the shore of Greece. He was glad to pass the land, which had given birth to Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Hippocrates and Alexander the Great. It was the land of ancient philosophers and poets. On Sunday, August 17th, Shah cruised the waters of Turkey, near the town of Dardanelles. On his left was Asia, and on his right, was Europe. In Dardanelles, Shah was welcomed by the Prime Minister of the Ottoman Empire, who formally welcomed His Majesty into their land. Later that day, Shah’s vessel entered the sea of Marmara. Shah was looking around the hall to see who the other girl was. As Shah took her and helped her up to sit beside him, with a look of desire, her light mood affected Shah, who began to feel the same lightness and joy as she. Shah asked her name. She whispered deliciously, "Melaahe (Tender Affection)." Shah took a liking to the meaning of her name, and started to tease her. Opening the conversation, in a very light seductive manner, he asked her, "Where are you so tender? Which part of you?" Melaahe answered, "It is to your honor wherever you would like me to be." And Shah replied, "I can feel it. Do I need to speak of it aloud, and spoil the dream?" Shah laughed and Melaahe was laughing too. Her cheeks turned red and blossomed. She smiled, as joy and excitement went to learn how to do it themselves. Verdi was eager to invite them that very afternoon, but, as the younger girl pointed out, there was to be a reception in the Hunkar-Sofasi (Hall of the Sultan) the next evening, and so it would be best for them to visit the following day.
