Year 2003
Brian woke up in the middle of the night, he
was shaking and sweaty. It was there again, his nightmare, about the day when
all five Backstreeters performed together for the last time. He will never
forget what happened that day.
30.6.2002, the day
from hell.....
Flashback
"Nick, your solo is next. Good luck buddy." Brian said
and smiled. Kevin came out of the stage and Nick went in. Brian watched while
his best buddy came to the light. Fans went totally nuts when Nick's familiar
figure came out of the darkness. The first notes of I need you tonight started
and Nick began to sing:
"Open up your heart to me, And say what's
on your mind, I know we have been so much pain, But I still need you in my
life,"
"I need you tonight, I need you right now, I know deep within
my heart, Doesn't matter if it's wrong or right, I Need you to........."
Then they heard a shot, Nick fell down, in the middle of the word.
He still had his microphone in his hand and everybody heard when he screamed in
pain. Everything happened so fast. Brian ran to the stage, he fell onto his
knees beside Nick and screamed:
"Somebody call 911"
Brian stroke Nick's face with his hand and cried. He looked into
Nick's eyes and saw just pain and fear. "Brian," Nick moaned,
"Tell my family that I love them." "You're not dying" Brian
cried. "Nick please speak to me, you're not dying." "I love you,
buddy" Nick whispered when he closed his eyes. Brian knew that his best
buddy was dead. Backstreet was dead. Brian hugged him and cried hard. "I
love you too Nick," he whispered.
End of Flashback
Brian went to the kitchen, he couldn't sleep anymore. Every time
when he closed his eyes he saw Nick's eyes, his painful look when he was dying.
Brian drank a little bit of water and then he went to the living room. He turned
on the TV and started to watch MTV. He remembered the nights when he and Nick
had watched TV all night and talked and laughed.
Suddenly he felt something on his shoulder, a hand. On the couch,
a familiar figure was sitting beside him. Nick.... Brian shook his head and
tried to think if he was still asleep.
"You're not dreaming, Brian. It's me. Why are you trying to
forget me, buddy?" Nick asked softly. "It hurts too much to
remember" Brian whispered. "I know it hurts, but when time goes on,
someday you can look at the old pictures of us and laugh at our stupid jokes
and what we've done together." Nick said. "Thanks Nick"
"And, Brian remember, I'm always with you, watching what you do and what
you think." "Always?" "Yeah, I'll always know what my B-rok
is doing, it's my job, man. I'm your guardian angel now." Nick smiled.
Brian was speechless. Nick laughed and rolled his eyes. "Smile, maybe your
ugly face would look a bit better then." He said to Brian "You
haven't changed a bit." Brian said. "Nah, I've changed a lot, but
inside I'm still your Frack who did practical jokes to you. And I'm still doing
them to you, the only difference is that you can't hit me after them."
Nick laughed. "I thought that your job was to be my guardian angel."
Brian said, smiling. "Do you remember when your alarm went off in the
middle of the night?" Nick asked. "Was it you? You almost got me to
get heart attack!!!!!" Brian yelled. "See? I'm still your
Frack," Nick grinned. "Don't do it again, please," Brian smiled.
"I won't cuz it's an old joke now, but I have a lot of new ones. I have to
go now, but don't forget me, buddy. I'm always there for you, Frick." Nick
said and then he disappeared.
Brian couldn't help, but smile. Slowly he went to his bedroom and
took a large box from his closed. He opened it, there were all his Backstreet
things, he had put them into it when Nick died. The gold and platinum records,
their albums and singles, a lot of photographs, demos, and then he saw the
familiar album. Nick's first and only solo album. It was released in the summer
of 2000 when they had a big break with Backstreet boys. Brian put the CD into
the player and Nick's voice filled the room.
Brian looked into the box again and the he saw the necklace. It
was Nick's. Brian had taken it when Nick died to his arms. Slowly he put it
onto his neck and whispered: "I will never forget you Nick Carter"
When the night continued Brian had put all the gold and platinum
records onto his walls and now he looked at them proudly. "Backstreet will
always be there, no matter what." He thought.
Then he took the photographs out of the box and started to look at
them. He and Nick. The boys on the Bahamas. Howie and Nick. He and Nick on the
stage. AJ's birthday. Kev and Nick. Howie and AJ on the Backstreet bus. Nick
alone with a strange look on his face. Brian laughed and looked at the next
picture. The boys on the MTV music awards. Kev. He, Howie and AJ. Nick and Kev.
Aaron and the boys. The boys dancing on the stage. 14 years old Nick. The boys
on the stage in the Sea world. Brian remembered that day like if it was
yesterday, it was their first show together. Brian had joined the band just a
few days earlier. He laughed at the picture, they all looked so nervous, and
Nick was so small, he was shorter than Howie, but he was just 13 in this
picture.
He looked into the box. There were still all his Backstreet
videos, then he saw some photographs under the videos. Nick's funeral pictures.
He hadn't ever looked at them, he took them and looked at the first picture. A
green coffin. A single tear slipped down to Brian's cheek. He took the next
picture. Nick's last sleeping place, but when Brian looked at it closer he saw
something beside the grave. It was Nick, he stood there, and looked right into
the camera. Tears were running on Brian's face, but he didn't feel pain like
before, he just missed Nick so much.
Suddenly he heard the doorbell ring and he run downstairs. When he
opened the door there was nobody. But Brian knew who it was.... Nick, of
course. Trying to cheer his buddy up. "See ya in heaven, buddy."
Brian whispered and waved to the sky. The sun was rising and for a second Brian
saw a figure standing beside him.
