Chapter 4
Rob walked over towards Kevin. He reached into
his pocket, pulling out a gun. Kevin stood still. Rob laughed evilly. His
rotten teeth revealed.
Instead of shooting Kevin, Rob flung the gun
back pistol-whipping Kevin in the head. Kevin fell immediately to the floor,
unconscious.
“Jack, Craig get in here,” Rob yelled
impatiently. Within a matter of seconds Jack and Craig appeared at the door. “Get
‘im outta here.
Jack
and Craig obeyed, lifting Kevin’s limp body in their arms.
When they returned to the basement, Howie,
Nick, and A.J. were anxiously waiting for Kevin. Talking quietly, reassuring
one another that Kevin would be okay. Brian still lay sound asleep next to
Nick. When Jack and Craig walked in the three of them gasped, in unison. They
laid Kevin on the floor next to Howie.
“Oh my God,” A.J. whispered taking sight of
Kevin. A.J. watched as Howie inspected Kevin. “Do you think he’ll be okay D.?
“I…I don’t know,” Howie spoke silently. “He was
hit in the head pretty hard guys.”
Howie, Nick, and A.J. tried for over an hour to
wake Kevin, or get a reaction out of him some how. Nothing worked.
Brian woke up minutes after they gave up. He
sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes.
“Hey Brian.”
“Hey AJ,” Brian replied wearily
“What’s wrong with Kevin,” Brian demanded
looking at his cousin.
The
three of them exchanged glances.
Howie decided to tell Brian. “Rok, Kevin got
smart with Craig and Jack, they took him to Rob. We think Rob hit him with
somethin’ pretty hard in the head. He won’t wake up,” Howie informed solemnly.
Brian
gasped. He looked at Kevin then turned away lying back down on his pillow,
silently crying.
“Bri,” Nick rushed over next to Brian. Brian
sat up bringing his hands to his eyes. Nick wrapped his arm around him in an
attempt to comfort him.
“He can’t die!”
“Brian,” A.J. yelled startling them all. “We
will NOT let Kevin die!” “I promise,” A.J. finished his voice softening.
A full
day had passed and Kevin still hadn’t waked. In fact they hadn’t seen Jack or
Craig the whole day. They were all starving and very thirsty.
Brian
sat up with Kevin as the other three slept. Watching him for any slight sign
that he would wake up. Brian gasped
when Kevin stirred. “Oh my God, Howie AJ, Nick wake up!
Kevin slowly opened his eyes.
“Kev,” Brian spoke his voice wavering in fear.
Fear that Kevin wouldn’t be the same.
They watched intently as Kevin sat up.
“What,” he asked.
Nick flung his arms around him.
“Oh God guys I’m fine,” Kevin stated as he
realized they thought he was going to die.
Kevin talked to them for a while reassuring
them that he was ok.
Their conversation was cut short when Jack,
Rob, Craig, and Charlie walked in.
Brian, Nick, Kevin, Howie and A.J. stood up
quickly following the four men.
“Hello boys,” Rob greeted them in a cheery
voice, which made all five of them cringe. “Let’s go.”
They walked outside. It was hot out, once
again. None of them had the energy to work. They didn’t have a choice. All day
long they worked in the sweltering heat, doing numerous jobs.
At around six while they were chopping wood,
Nick noticed that Craig wasn’t looking, in fact he was walking into the house.
“Guys, lets run for it!”
“No way Nick,” Howie whispered.
“C’mon we could run fast and get out of here
its our only chance!”
“Nick,” Kevin said silently. “Craig just went
in for a minute, that isn’t nearly enough time to bust outta here!”
Nick
looked at Kevin and then the sun burnt faces of his friends as they worked.
Nick dropped his ax and ran.
Craig and Jack immediately saw him and ran out
of the house chasing him.
“Nick,” Brian
yelled dropping his ax, chasing after, only to be jerked back roughly. Brian
turned around. Rob looked at Brian.
“You ain’t goin’ anywhere boy!”
“LET ME GO,” Brian screamed. “You freaking
jerk!”
“NO,” A.J. yelled grabbing Brian away from Rob.
“It’s alright Brian, it’s alright Nick will be okay.”
Jack
and Craig came back their hands grasping Nick’s arm’s tightly.
Rob grabbed Nick taking him inside. He then
ordered Jack and Craig to take Brian.
The two immediately grabbed Brian, following
Rob and Nick inside.
Charlie came out with another large man they
had never seen before both holding a gun in their hands.
“Let’s go,” Charlie ordered.
Howie Kevin and A.J. went with the two
following them back to the basement.
