Brian glanced out his window and watched as
Anna fell to the ground. She looked awful. Her hair was all tangled, mascara
had run down her face mingling with the redness of her tear stained ace. She
was wearing flannel black pants with a huge green sweater and tennis shoes to
complete the outfit. It looked like she had lost a lot of weight. Never had he
seen her look this bad.
Brian
continued to stare somehow she still looked beautiful. His heart longed to just
run out there and say he was sorry. But how could he? She had said those
things, but she was trying to make up.
“What to do?
This is my last chance if I want her back. I can’t turn around again!”
Without
thinking, just following his heart, Brian opened the door. Slowly ge walked
away over to Anna and knelt down beside her. He tried to pull her in his arms
but her body flinched at his touch.
“Anna,
please.” Brian whispered trying again.
“Brian don’t.
You’re right. I don’t deserve another chance.”
“We’ve both
been wrong. Just forget everything.
“How can I?
It’s so much. Just so many years, so much of my life.
“Don’t forget
the good! Just the bad. Remember it was my life too. We’ve both made mistakes.
Just forget.”
Anna slowly
and tiredly crawled into Brian’s waiting arms. Brian held Anna tightly, scared
if he let go she would really leave.
“Brian....”
Brian cut her
off with a kiss. Anna relaxed, as just like in the past, her hand ran up to the
cow-lick on the side of his hair. She twisted it slowly around her fingers.
“You haven’t
changed...I knew the whole time.”
“You weren’t
supposed to, yet I should have known. You know me inside and out. So are we
back to those sleepless nights?”
“Are the
phones open to me, even on those busy nights?”
“Of course you
need your rest. Although I think you called most of the time so I could talk
you to sleep.”
“Did you
mind?”
“Never! Never
ever. Just keep those phones ringing night and day. Just never leave me again.”
“Trust me, I
won’t.” Brian sighed with contentment as he continued to hold Anna securely.
I guess we were both wrong.
That one fateful day months ago
How does life
always have its peculiar ways
of showing us
our destiny?
Thank you for giving
me a second chance
for taking on
those many sleepless nights
