for skill development may include reading comprehension, vocabulary, and
basic writing skills as determined by each individual's IEP.

Open to: Sophomores
This is a year long, two credit course
for students with identified skills deficits. Instructional areas
may include reading comprehension and paragraph to essay writing as determined
by each individual's IEP.
English 5-6
Open to: Juniors
This is a year long, two credit course
for students with identified skill deficits. Instructional areas
may include various forms of basic literature, writing through literature
and other communication skills as identified in each individual's IEP.
English 7-8
Open to: Seniors
This is a year long, two credit course
for students with identified skills deficits. Instructional areas
may include reading technical and content area materials, newspapers and
other lifelong reading activities as determined in each individual's IEP.
Reading Seminar I
Open to: All Students
This is a year long, two credit course
for students who are reading significantly below grade level. The
curriculum will be used to improve student decoding skills, vocabulary
knowledge, and comprehensive skills as determined by each individual's
IEP. Time is also spent on individual reading and improving reading
skills in content areas.
Reading Seminar II

This is a year long, two credit course
for students who are reading significantly below grade level. The
curriculum will be used to improve student comprehension skills and vocabulary
knowledge as determined by the individual's IEP. Time is also spent on
individual reading and improving reading skills in content areas.
Math 1-2

This is a year long, two credit course
designed to teach or review the fundamental concepts of mathematics as
determined by the individual IEP. The class will focus on basic mathematical
operations through practical application.
Math 3-4

This is a year long, two credit course
designed to teach or review the fundamental concepts of mathematics as
determined by the individual IEP. The class will review basic math
operations, provide additional instruction toward mastery and focus on
consumer applications.
Math 5-6

This is a year long, two credit course
designed to teach or review the fundamental concepts of mathematics as
determined by the individual IEP. The class will review basic math
skills and apply them to consumer related math concepts.

World History

This is a year long, two credit course
that presents an overview of the ideas and civilizations that formulated
the world as we now know it. The students will study the societies,
themes and issues which mark the interaction of both eastern and western
civilizations.
US. History
Open to: All Students

This is a year long, two credit course
that presents an overview of the geography of the United States, our historical
background and a study of current events.
Government
Open to: Seniors and others by special

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a one semester, one credit
course that presents the organization of local, state and federal government
and their agencies. Emphasis is placed on citizen responsibility
toward the government, its laws and the benefits of good citizenship.
Consumer Economics
Open to: Seniors and others by special

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a one semester, one credit
course designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of consumer
economics in the areas of housing, insurance, credit buying, investments,
comparative shopping, and money management. Information on consumer
rights and responsibilities will be covered.
Applied Biology

This course is intended to help students
understand their everyday surroundings. The course will provide students
with the skills and opportunities they need to read, write, think, and
do and apply science in their everyday lives.
Environmental Science
Open to: All Students

This is a year long, two semester course
which will present an overview of science in the context of the environmental
challenges we face as we move into the 21st century.
Career Skills
Open to: All Students

This is a year long, two semester course
which will help students develop competencies to be successful in the work
environment. Students will improve and practice communication skills
in listening, discussion, interviews, interpersonal communication, and
public speaking. Students will become competent in using the Choices
program to learn about occupations, education required, schools, and financial
aid, to meet their individual needs and interests. Students will
develop a career planning portfolio that will include personal information,
letters of application, resume, follow-up letters, business letters, and
other career related material (Fulfills the Speech requirement for graduation.)
Vocational Education I
Open to: All Students
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This course is designed to utilize the
resources of business and industry within the community to give the students
work experience and to further develop their social and academic skills
in a work environment. Students will be evaluated weekly or monthly
by the supervisor or employer. One day a week, students will receive
classroom instruction to review evaluations, problem-solve, and improve
their skills related to the work environment. There are three options
for students to earn vocational education credit according to their individual
needs, abilities, and interests.
1) Enclave: This is an non paid work experience. A teacher or an associate will supervise a group of 2-5 students at a business following a specific training plan. Typically a freshmen course for two credits.
2) Work Exploratory: This is a non paid work experience. An individual student will receive job training at a business supervised by the employer. Typically a sophomore course for two credits.
3) Work Experience: This is a paid work experience. Students will be aided in acquiring a job, will work a minimum of 10 per week, and may work during the block scheduled time or after school. Typically a junior or senior course for four credits.
Vocational Education II

Career Skills II

This is a two semester, two credit course
designed to develop the competencies necessary for the student with special
needs to survive and prosper in the work environment. The goal of
the Career Skills Class II will be to identify and develop individual student
short term and long term career planning goals.
Life Management
Open to: all students
Prerequisite: Teacher/WEI Recommendation
Life management addresses issues that
students will face as an adult. It will be offered as a hands on
course that will utilize speakers and field trips in the community.
It is divided into four main units of study.
Behavior Awareness
Open to: all students
Prerequisite: none
This class presents students with the
opportunity to learn and develop personal skills that will help them to
effectively interact with others at home, school, and work.
Self-Assessment
Open to: all students
Prerequisite: None
This course is designed to teach awareness
of daily behaviors and to help students evaluate their progress with their
behavioral plans.
