by each individual's IEP.

This is a year long, two credit course
for students with identified skill deficits. Instructional areas
may include various forms of basic literature, writing through literature
and other communication skills as identified in each individual's IEP.
English 7-8

This is a year long, two credit course
for students with idenified skills deficits. Instructional areas
may include reading technical and content area materials, newspapers and
other lifelong reading activities as determined in each individual's IEP.
Reading Seminar I
Open to: All Students
This is a year long, two credit course
for students who are reading significantly below grade level. The
curriculum will be used to improve student decoding skills, vocabulary
knowledge, and comprehensive skills as determined by each individual's
IEP. Time is also spent on individual reading and improving reading
skills in content areas.
Reading Seminar II

This is a year long, two credit course
for students who are reading significantly below grade level. The
curriculum will be used to improve student comprehension skills and vocabulary
knowledge as determined by the individual's IEP. Time is also spent on
individual reading and improving reading skills in content areas.
Study Skills

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a year long, two credit course
designed for students who receive the majority of their instruction in
the general education curriculum. Instruction may include how to
learn and use strategies to be successful in the general education curriculum.
Leaning strategies are techniques, rules or principles that enable a student
to learn to solve problems, complete tasks and become independent learners.
Specific study skills as identified in the IEP are the focus of the class.
Integrated Skills

This is a two semester, 2 credit course
designed to continue to develop various aspects of practical and independent
living skills. It integrated other areas of study (language, math,
social behavior, science, English, and history) and combines additional
practive to enhance the information into practical everyday use.
Math 1-2

This is a year long, two credit course
designed to teach or review the fundamental concepts of mathematics as
determined by the individual IEP. The class will focus on basic mathematical
operations through practical application.
Math 3-4

This is a year long, two credit course
designed to teach or review the fundamental concepts of mathematics as
determined by the individual IEP. The class will review basic math
operations, provide additional instruction toward mastery and focus on
consumer applications.
Math 5-6

determined by the individual IEP. The class will review basic math
skills and apply them to consumer related math concepts.

U.S. History

This is a year long, two credit course
that presents an overview of the geography of the United States, our historical
background and a study of current events.
Government
Open to: Seniors and others by special

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a one semester, one credit
course that presents the organization of local, state and federal government
and their agencies. Emphasis is placed on citizen responsibility
toward the government, its laws and the benefits of good citizenship.
Consumer Economics
Open to: Seniors and others by special

Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a one semester, one credit
course designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of consumer
economics in the areas of housing, insurance, credit buying, investments,
comparative shopping, and money management. Information on consumer
rights and responsibilities will be covered.
Health Science
Open to: All Students
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a year long, two credit course
that focuses on health related issues. The course will focus on the
physical, emotional, and social aspects of a healthy lifestyle. The
student will explore job opportunities in the health field and how to use
community health services.
Family Living
Open to: Seniors and others by special
arrangement
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a year long, two credit course
that will focus on interpersonal and parenthood education. The course
may cover such topics as: self awareness, relationships, sexuality, marriage,
parenting, and child development.
Career Skills I
Open to: Freshman
Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This is a two semester, two credit course
designed to develop the competencies necessry for the student with special
needs to survive and prosper in the work environment. The goal of
the Career Skills Class will be to identify and describe ways to develop
the student's personal/social/occupational competencies. (Fulfills
the Speech requirements for graduation.)
Work Exploratory 9
Open to: Sophomores
Prerequisite: Teacher/WEI Recommendation
This is a second semester, one credit
course designed to allow students with special needs to work within the
community in an enclave setting (group fo students working together on
a job site). The student will receive the enclave experiences two
hours per day, one day a week, and will last up to eight weeks. Exceptions
can be made by the Special Education Teacher/WEI.
Career Skills II
Open to: Sophomores
Prerequisite: Career Skills Class
I and Teacher Recommendation
This is a two semester, two credit course
designed to develop the compretencies necessary for the student with special
needs to survive and prosper in the work environment. The goal of
the Career Skills Class II will be to identify and develop individual student
short term and long term career planning goals.
Work Exploratory 10
Open to: Sophomores
Prerequisite: Teacher/WEI Recommendation
This two semester, two credit course is
a continuation of enclave efforts within the community. The exploratory
experience can be paid or non-paid status. The students will spend
two hour per day, two eight week exploratory work experiences during each
semester. Students who successfully complete requirements for the
course receive a credit each semester. Students are required to meet
with the WEI/Teacher at the time of the weekly evaluations.
Job Orientation
Open to: Juniors
Prerequisite: Teacher/WEI Recommendation
This is a two semester, two credit course
that presents an overview of jobs available in the Dubuque area.
instruction will center on requirements for work, interview techniques,
employment services, methods of job procurement, appropriate dress, job
behavior, job attitudes, job responsibility, job hours and personal handling
of salary through proper budgeting. Students will be instructed in
the career decision making process of: establishing goals, identifying
resources, considering alternatives, making decisions, implementing the
decisions and evaluating the results. (Fulfills the World History requirement)
Work Experience 11 & 12
Open to: Juniors and Seniors
Prerequisite: Teacher/WEI Recommendation
This is a two semester, four credit course
where students are placed on a paid and/or unpaid part-time job in school
or in the community for a minimum of 10 hours per week. The WEI visits
the job sites monthly for evaluation of students performance in accordance
with the training agreement. Students are aided in actually defining,
seeking out and acquiring preparation for entry into the world of work.
Work experience assists students in gaining competitive employment by training
them in job skills and providing a flexible learning environment better
suited to their special needs. Students are required to meet with
the WEI/Teacher monthly at the time of the evaluation.
