From the Minister's Desk I was discussing the other day with one of the members of DTCC about individuals who have come, joined us, and then quit coming. They asked me if I ever take it personally when people quit coming to church and my response was yes. I don't think that one can be in the position of minister without some ownership in those who join the congregation as well as those who leave. Most of the time I am aware of the reasons they have quit coming and it usually doesn't have anything to do with me or with the congregation. But it still makes it hard to accept that people do not see the need to become active and instead either quit going to church altogether or move on to another congregation. There is no question that my ego is involved. Why would anyone not want to come to DTCC and participate in the programs and the worship services we offer? That's my ego talking. In reality I know that many things attract many people and that try as we might none of us will be all things to all people. I realize that and it still doesn't make it any easier to see people drop out of church. But what about those who are members in good standing at DTCC and who chose not to be very active? Do I take personal responsibility for them also? The answer is still yes. Yes, I wonder if I have done something to cause them to stay away. Could I or should I have done things differently such as preach a different sermon or said something to them in a different manner? Then my psychology teaching comes in to play and I realize that I'm really not responsible for other people- only for myself. And I am okay until the next Sunday when things start all over again! I do hope to see you all this coming Sunday as we install our newly elected Elders and Diaconate. Your Pastor |
MARK YOUR CALENDARS – Sunday, January 28 will be Laity Sunday
MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS
On Christmas Eve, Brenda and Richard Jones came back home. The couple first joined DTCC in 1970. Brenda came with a Baptist background and Richard grew up at Macon Christian. As a young couple expecting their first child (Chuck), they wanted a church home. Through the years Brenda and Richard were active at DTCC, raising both sons, Chuck and William in the church. In 1991, Richard began the Disciple’s School of Lay Ministry. As a licensed minister Richard has served at DTCC as Minister of Membership and at Collierville as Minister of Evangelism. Richard served 3 years as minister at Pleasants Christian Church and most recently almost 3 years at Winchester Heights. Last July the couple lost their younger son, William, in a tragic car accident. Richard is now on sabbatical from ministry due to health reasons. Richard owns Trinity Appraisal Services and Brenda works for the IRS as a district secretary. She enjoys being a grandmother to their 5 grandchildren. Please welcome Brenda and Richard back into the fellowship of DTCC.
On the first Sunday of the new year Sarah and David Parnell transferred their memberships from Cherry Road Baptist to DTCC. Sarah is the daughter of Rick Pilon. She and David have known each other since school days at Wooddale Junior High. The kept in touch and began dating three years ago. On December 22 they celebrated their second wedding anniversary. David, who loves to ride his Honda Night Hawk, dreams of one day owning a larger motorcycle. He works as a diesel mechanic for Memphis Area Transit. Sarah, who works as a receptionist for Pepsi-Cola Corporate Office, enjoys all kinds of crafts, especially counted cross-stitching. In her free time she also like to work crossword puzzles and to play video games on the Playstation. Because they grew up in different church backgrounds, the couple was seeking a church where they could both feel comfortable. They believe they’ve found the right church home at DTCC. Sarah plans to join the Tabitha CWF group. Please welcome this couple
