October 9, 2001

I am often reminded of the saying that "When it rains, it pours."  Sometimes things come in bundles and this past week was one of those times.  As most of you are aware, Karen and I decided to leave town for three days.  We just needed to get away hoping to return a little more refreshed.  The plan was okay until we got home and I had several phone recordings that told me the next few days would be very busy.  Jean Luzier passed away on Wednesday and the family was anxious to get things settled.  The service was Saturday and we had several of our church family present.  Another recording was that Francis Epperson had also passed away on Thursday.  Again, services would need to be set up and since she had no family that was interested in doing this, the load fell on a neighbor and DTCC.  Fortunately, Rev. Bob Williams was willing to step up to bat and provide the service for this past Monday.  I needed to be out of town for two meetings in Nashville at the Regional Conference Center.  I was aware that Dorotha Gordon had passed away and that her son Jan wanted a memorial service at DTCC.  But I did not know until I got home late Thursday night that the service was requested for Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.  The only conclusion I can make of this is that I should not leave town.  On a serious note, please remember the families of these three individuals.  They were good friends to many of you and I know that you will miss them.

On to some happier news.  The board chair had called a congregational meeting this past Sunday and the budget was presented by our distinguished Stewardship Chair, Greg Bostian.  The budget was approved and we went into the CFC for a wonderful dinner.  Gregg challenged us to put the church first in our list of priorities.  The theme for this year's stewardship drive is "Dessert First."  Let us not forget the Lord's house and all He had done for us.  As Gregg reminded us Sunday afternoon, there will always be times when we don't like the way things are going in the church, but that should not be an excuse to withhold what God expects from us.  That money we give is not to the local church, it is obedience to God and what He wants Christians to do.

I again look forward to worshipping with you all as we celebrate our faith in Jesus Christ.

Your Pastor

WEEK OF THE MINISTRY

Over the years this congregation has been served and blessed by many whom we have called Clergy. Individuals who have brought their many different gifts and talents to lead us as God’s church known as Decatur Trinity Christian Church.

In faith, each have come with their strengths to help us, individually and collectively, know God’s will and purpose for us.

Yes, each has come in response to our call; but let us never forget that their coming has been in response to a greater call-that of God.

And each have been faithful to that call in their own unique way.

Because of their differences we have been led in different directions which has made us the church God has called us to be.

We currently are blessed to have Scott and Bob, who recently retired, who are committed to being there for us. They are with us in our times of worship, learning, celebration; and most importantly, in our times of grief, doubts and pain.

Thanks for the leadership, faith and commitment of our clergy we are able to be church within this community. Reaching out to thousands over the years in such a way that they have come to experience God’s love and grace.

This week is Week of the Ministry. Let us take time to give a special word of thanks and encouragement to Scott and others. And let us not forget their spouses and families who have supported them and us, in their years of ministry. Also remember those who have served us in the past.

Join your Worship Committee in saying “THANKS” by making a call, sending a card or offering a special word of appreciation this week.
