November 20, 2001

Last Sunday was celebration Sunday when the congregation celebrated the conclusion of the estimate of giving campaign by the stewardship committee.  Our stewardship chairman, Greg Bostian, gave us the figures for next year and then had the children gather at the front.  It was here that things got interesting.  He gave each child a cup-cake or twinkie cake to illustrate that we all love dessert.  After giving the children their goodies, he then talked to them about how great it would be to give that away, thinking that the children would all agree.  What he didn't count on was that these were children and they will tell you what is on their minds.  In unison, they disagreed with Greg and wanted to keep the little cakes for themselves.  What they didn't know was that Greg had more than enough of the cakes to go around to all the members of the congregation and even more for the children.  With the help of one of the older children, he managed to get the children to give up their cakes to the membership.  I observed that many of them went to their family and gave their cakes to them.  I suspect that they figured they could get the cakes back later from dad or mom or grandparents.

After the children gave away their goodies, Greg brought them to the front and then told them that there were more baskets of cakes behind the altar.  The children's faces lit up when they realized that there were lots of desserts to go around.  The finishing touch was when they had given out cakes to all those present, Greg told them they could have two cakes each because they were willing to give up the one they first had.

This was quite a demonstration of how we can be blessed when we take care of others first.  We adults are like the children in that we tend to hoard what we have and not want to give it to someone else.  There are no promises that we will ever get anything back if we do give what's ours away.  We simply have to trust in God and that he will provide for our needs.  That really is what the estimate of giving card is all about.  Giving away part of what is ours, knowing that God will not let us down.  It's a promise that most of us would agree is true and yet when the time comes to put down a figure, we are challenged as what we should do.

Thank you Greg for that wonderful object lesson.  I hope that we learned something from watching our children.  I do hope that all of you have a happy Thanksgiving and give God the praise for all that you have.  We live in a wonderful country and I believe that is so because we have tried to live by the principles of the Bible.  See you all this Sunday.

Your Pastor
