From the Minister's Desk

What a time we had last week as we celebrated the Week Of Compassion. As you know, every year the Disciples of Christ take up an offering that goes into a special fund at Indianapolis to help take care to disasters that occur around the world during the year. We were especially fortunate at DTCC to have the Director of Week of Compassion, Johnny Wray speak to us on Wednesday, February 21st about how our money is used. He showed us slides of India where they had that devastating earthquake that killed as many as 40,000 people and displaced as many as a million people. He also showed us slides of Haiti where people are the poorest in the Western Hemisphere. He showed where our money helps some of the people live in houses that go way beyond the shacks they have lived in for years. He also showed where our money helps buy small chicks and they raise them to adulthood and sell the eggs which gives them money to buy needed food and clothes for the family.

Then Sunday we were fortunate to hear Dr. Glen Stewart speak to us about his trips to Haiti where the Disciples of Christ have two missionaries. These people are in such dire need. They have nothing compared to what we expect in life. Now comes the really good part! You, as a congregation, have given over $4700 so far! I expect that we will have given over $5000 before we are through. Last year the World Outreach committee set a goal of $4000 for the Week of Compassion. This was considerably more money than we had every raised before. The committee thought it was ambitious, but why not? You, as members of DTCC, met the challenge. This year the committee was hoping to at least match last year's giving and instead you increased the giving by almost 25%! Thank you, thank you for your wanting to help people though out the world that have nothing. Your generosity will provide others with food and housing and the ability to earn a little money to buy clothes.

Now for this Sunday. Let's not forget that this is "Youth Sunday" and we need to be here to support our youth as they lead us in worship.

MEET OUR NEW MEMBERS

Mary Cumberland says she sometimes wonders if she and husband Jerry were born in the wrong century. Our newest members would be perfectly happy living in the middle 1800’s. Jerry and Mary Cumberland who reunited with DTCC last Sunday, are Civil War buffs. Both retired, the Cumberlands fill their days with the memories and memorabilia of a past century.

Mary has spent the last two years researching the life of Mariam Beck Forrest Luxton, mother of Confederate War hero Nathan Bedford Forrest. Now she’s writing a book about her. When she and Jerry travel around the region presenting Living History programs for churches, schools and other groups, Mary often portrays Mrs. Luxton. Jerry also portrays different Civil War characters when they speak with different groups.

Jerry is the West Tennessee Brigade Commander for the Sons of Confederate Soldiers and is also the commander of the local Shelby-Gray camp. The couple travels on weekends to participate in Civil War reenactments. Jerry is part of a group of dismounted calvary, but portrays soldiers from both sides. Mary creates her period clothing and makes Jerry’s shirts. All must be period correct – no zippers or velcro allowed! Jerry and Mary also do genealogical research for people.

The couple has two children who were raised at DT CC. Corey, now married, lives in Alamo. Christian Elise is a floral designer in midtown. The Cumberlands, who were active at DTCC for almost 20 years transferred their membership to Highland Heights Presbyterian Church about five years ago. "But it didn’t feel right," said Mary. "Now we’re back home." Please welcome the Cumberlands and add them to your directory.
