June 25, 2001

There is no question that summer is here. It isn't so much that we have become unbearably hot in Memphis, but that people are going here and there and attendance is down during morning worship. I noticed this in California a week ago when Karen and I attended church with my mom and step-dad. The minister commented that there were many gone that Sunday which caused attendance to drop significantly. That is just one of those things we expect during the summer months.

Visiting family is very important to Karen and myself. Every year we fly to California and visit ether Karen's mom who lives in San Diego or my mom who lives north of Sacramento. (Those two cities are approximately 600 miles apart which makes one trip unlikely.) The reason we visit them has something to do with my sermon last Sunday. I quoted a young man who had killed his friend over some money they had stolen. When justifying his actions the young man replied that "everything is meaningless and nothing matters because we are all going to die." The counter to that statement is that "because we are all going to die, everything matters." I buy into this second statement. I think that because death is inevitable, we need to take things more seriously. Our relationship with God should be most important followed by our relationship with our family. Unfortunately, I see too many people who are more than willing to let their relationships deteriorate in order to pursue fame and fortune. When that happens then everyone loses.

But I also realize that it is easier to say we love our family than it is to show that love. Showing love requires effort. Sometimes it is effort that we would rather put elsewhere. To say that we love God is one thing. To show that we love God by privately and collectively worshipping together is another. I am reminded of the epistle of James where we are reminded: "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he had looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was"(James 1:22-24). To more clearly understand our relationship with God, we have to commune with Him frequently. And that should matter.

See you in worship this Sunday.

A big thank you to my church family for the many prayers and cards I received when I had my heart problem. Your love and concern is much appreciated.

You, our church family, have greatly enriched our lives these many years. Our love for you is very strong. We thank God for you in our lives. It is our Lord Jesus Christ who unites us in a spirit of unity. Praise Him. Love, Jane Williams

Dear Christian Friends,

Thank you for all of the prayers, cards, telephone calls and well wishes during my recent hospitalization for knee replacement surgery.

The doctor said the surgery went perfect and the healing and rehabilitation is way ahead of schedule.

I know in my heart that this happened because of your prayers and love for Sue and me.

Thank you all.

Love, Smitty & Sue

DTCC PERMANENT FUND

Included in the Visitor this week is the text of the DTCC Permanent Fund approved by the Board of Directors on June 7, 2001. This document has been in the works for over two years and I want to thank the current and former members of the Board of Directors for their hard work. The creation of this policy has required a great deal of persistence and determination, and because of that effort we now have a new opportunity to review and ask questions prior to a final vote by The Official Board. If you have questions or comments, please address those to Thom Eckles, to one of the members of the Board of Directors, or to myself. This is an important program for DTCC because in the past we’ve not had a policy to administer cash and non-cash gifts that have been given to the church. In the future, members will know how gifts will be handled and can plan accordingly should they desire to expand their stewardship giving to DTCC. Please read the document, ask questions if clarification is needed, and make comments so we will fully understand how the policy affects each member of Decatur-Trinity Christian Church.

Thank you. Ron Ramsey, Chairman of the Board

?????

It’s expansive, reaches from floor almost to the ceiling. It has many shelves and openings. There are letters, numbers, blocks, and lines. Every color of the rainbow is represented. Some things are good and probably some things are bad – some true and some not true.

You can be born, grow up, marry, die, and learn to cook by walking through it.

You can travel at no cost: learn from your lawn chair; and be everything you’ve ever wanted to be. You can also learn how to throw away your old and become a new person.

The library is a fascinating place. It has a new home but needs a new caretaker. Someone to love it and teach others to do the same. It has a wealth of information and enjoyment: reference books, craft & cooking books, instructional assistance for teachers and preachers.

This summer, Brittany and Zach Vaughan and I are going to get it in better shape. But we need someone to help us promote it. Carol Rogers
