A little over a year ago, Bill Gates, co-founder and now major owner of Microsoft Corporation, spoke to a group of high school seniors on graduation day. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teaching has created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept sets them up for failure in the real world.
His first point is simple. "Life is not fair-get used to it." How often have we said "life is not fair" when we didn't like the way things were turning out. Unfortunately, children are not the only ones who say this. We adults are just as guilty when things aren't going our way. That is often a protest on our part because we didn't get a bigger "piece of the pie" when it comes to life. We look at the way some people live and wonder out loud why we didn't get more. Is there not one of us who hasn't driven by those half million to a million dollar homes in Memphis and wondered how anyone could deserve such luxury? It just doesn't seem fair. I suspect that some of those people inherited money from parents and that is their good fortune. Others made wise choices early in life and worked hard to achieve those goals. Still others may have just 'fallen' into the right job by accident. They didn't really have any idea what they wanted or where they were going, but somehow things just fell together for them. Don't you wish that would have happened to you?
Rule number eight says "Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life." Don't we wish. How often have we wished we could have had a second chance to have gone a different route? Maybe we would have but then again maybe we would have done the same thing. What I am aware of is that we each have 24 hours in a day and we have opportunities to choose what we will do and won't do. I will always remember Luther Coley and the day he called me some six or eight months ago. He said that he couldn't do much but that he wanted to do something more for his church. He said that he could call people who missed church on Sundays from his chair at home and wanted to know if this would be okay. I wholeheartedly agreed and for several months that is exactly what Luther did. He made a choice to do something and it was a benefit to him as well as the church. I wish we would all make that kind of choice when trying to figure out what to do. Maybe something will come to you in the next few days or weeks and you, too, will call the office with a suggestion. I hope so.

Thanks to Gene Pricer,
Thank you, Gene, for serving DTCC as Elder for a year and a half. You took your commitment seriously and served well. We regret that other responsibilities
interfere with your service as Elder at this time, but we know you will continue to serve in other ways. Your presence is valued to our congregation; your Christian spirit has deeply enriched our lives. In a recent called Official Board Meeting Bob Williams was elected to fill the vacancy left by Gene’s resignation.
