Toronto Ghost Signs

This striking-looking sign dates to the 1960's, as this meat market was in business from 1952 until about 1965. Notice the old-style phone number at the bottom: phone numbers with two letters and five digits were in common use from the mid-1950's to the mid-1960's.

The white paint is slowly peeling and fading, and I think there is another sign underneath this one. If nobody bothers to paint this wall for another twenty years, we may be able to see that sign, too.

There are actually two ghost signs on this wall: there's a sign for Milne Auto Body at the bottom left. This body shop was in business from 1952 to 1972.

Update, September 2006: this sign is now gone, as the building is being refurbished.
