Interview for DEATHTHRASHER MAGAZINE by
ARMANDO MUTILATOR :
Hi ARMANDO,
Here's the interview back!
A copy of our album "Storm Of The Horde" has been sent and is on its way to Peru!
Greetz CHRIS & KATAFALK

DT:
When and why the band was formed?.
Chris:
KATAFALK was formed in 1995 by me with some other Metalheads. Main purpose was (and still is) to play the music we like and kick some fucking ass having a good time doing it.
DT:
Why the name of KATAFALK?.
Chris:
KATAFALK is a Dutch word meaning hearse. It's coming on wheels and it's bringing death, exactly like we do when we come over and rock your socks off!
DT:
What topics do you consider in your lyrics?.
Chris:
Our singer WOKKEL mostly writes about real life. Still we also have traditional Metal lyrics (you know the ones with 666 in it… haha) because we like that \m/.
DT:
Your influences?.
Chris:
Basically the old Thrash and Death metal of the eighties/early nineties and some newer stuff also. IRON MAIDEN were the first band that got me into Metal and they still rule.
DT:
What do you know about South American Metal Scene?.
Chris:
Some old bands like SARCOFAGO and early SEPULTURA. Newer bands like KRISIUN and REBAELLIUN. I know the fans are really fanatic. It would be great to be touring there!

DT:
Do you like STAR WARS?.
Chris:
It's okay. I saw the original part III in the movies a youngster, great stuff. Did you know VADER took their name from DARTH VADER?
DT:
Tell me about your old Demos "THROUGH THE STORM" (1997 on tape) and "PROMO 2001" (on CD).
Chris :
The "Through The Storm" Demo (still on good old fashioned cassette) was our first studio effort and contained 5 songs, one of them being the classic "Rise Now" which has been re-recorded for our "Storm Of The Horde" album. Some melodic stuff on this one, yet raging fast parts too. Mixture of several styles (Heavy Metal, Thrash, Black, Death) 'Promo 2001' consisted of 3 songs in a lo-fi production which we sold extremely cheap. All songs of that one ("Birthmark 666" being on of them) ended up on the album, in a much better sound of course! The Promo kinda opened doors for us, selling out all 800 copies and giving us some name in the Dutch scene.
DT:
What do you think about extra-terrestrials? Do you believe in that?.
Chris:
Never had the occasion to meet one. But PETER of HYPOCRISY said that there's some strange shit going on out there and he's probably right haha
DT:
Are you into S&M?.
Chris:
As an form of art yes, I like to see women clad in leather and stuff! There's some great photography around. But I'm not an active S&M practicer if that's what you mean, you pervert hehehe.
DT:
Do you like GIGER's Art?.
Chris:
Very much! He did some great work and the ALIEN and SPECIES movies, as well as a lot of album covers (like CELTIC FROST's "To Mega Therion", for instance) I have some GIGER books and posters at home too.

DT:
Talk me about your "STORM OF THE HORDE" (COLD BLOOD INDUSTRIES).
Chris:
This is our debut album, released in 2003. It took us some time but it definitely has been worth the wait. 13 songs, 36:39. Tracks "Birthmark 666" and "Cannonfodder" can be downloaded from our website www.katafalk.com. Great mixture of fast and Brutal Death/Thrash/Black metal, sometimes even on the verge of Grindcore (not even one song without blastbeats!) but still with great melodies here and there. Bassplayer JURJEN isn't pictured but he did play (session) bass on the album. Now he has returned as a full member and so has vocalist WOKKEL, who actually did vocals on all of our releases. We got great reactions on this album.
DT:
Do you know about "MACHU PICCHU" ruins & "NAZCA´S lines"?.
Chris:
Yeah, it's a legendary mountain right? Well about the lines, funny way of drawing hahahaha
DT:
Do you play with bands like THANATOS, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, MALEVOLENT CREATION... tell us about that experience !!!
Chris:
Yes we did and what can I say, they're a bunch of nice guys actually.
DT:
PC or MACINTOSH? Do you know STEVE JOBS?.
Chris:
Never heard of STEVE JOBS. I'm using a PC at home. Macintosh could be better for graphical stuff.
DT:
Are you into PS2, GAMECUBE, X-BOX? or any VIDEO GAMES? Do you remember ATARI 2600?.
Chris:
Some friends of mine have PS2's and X-Boxes and they're really addictive. First (game)computer I remember was the Commodore 64. Next one I saw was the Atari 1040ST and you know what? When I enter a studio there's often one around! They still use 'm for clicktrack and stuff.
DT:
Your future plans?.
Chris:
Do some more touring and release a second album.
DT:
Any last comment for your most brutal fans?.
Chris:
UUUAAAARRRRRGGHHHHHH!!!! HARH HARH HARH!!!!!! Now that was brutal wasn't it?
Thanks a lot for the interview (and YOU for reading all this). Check out our website

Bang your head, drink beer and keep that pedal to the metal! Cheerz,
