Interview for DEATHTHRASHER MAGAZINE by ARMANDO MUTILATOR :

DT: Did you ever play under the name of OUTRAGE or did you use any other before? ...if so why the name of OUTRAGE?.
O:
We have been playing in the California Bay Area for about 3 and half years. We had a break from shows because we had difficulties with drummers. It took a year for us to find a drummer that was good enough and that DIDN'T have a problem playing with women. It's kinda hard to believe that kind of bias still exists. Especially in the kind of music we play where rules are meant to be broken. Where it doesn't matter what race you are or what your personal beliefs are. But yet it seems to matter if you are a woman or not. OUTRAGE previously went under the name PLANE JANE. At that time, it was just Ari (bass) and Tracy (guitar). As PLANE JANE began to form in it's entirety, the desire for a new name came into play. The name OUTRAGE happened to catch our attention and it stuck from there.

DT:
Define your style? ...Have you ever played the same style?.
O:
OUTRAGE is a Hardcore Thrash band. We play fast, intricate riffs and some brutally slow ones as well. All of our songs have a somewhat different feel to them. They include different styles and sounds. We have always attempted to do just that. Prior to the days of PLANE JANE, Tracy and Ari played with a couple of other women who felt they had a different direction in which they wanted to head. Tracy and Ari wanted to do "old" METALLICA and PANTERA covers while the others wanted to do rock tunes. They decided to part ways and Tracy and Ari have been together since. However, right from the breakup, they began to right original tunes. I (Kurt) started out into old blues-based rock like LED ZEPPELIN and THE WHO, etc. That's pretty funny, eh? Metal is pretty much where he found his home and it wasn't until 7 years later, that he met the PLANE JANE girls. Before you knew, Tracy and I were dating. I joined the band about a year later and now Tracy and I are married and have twins.

DT:
What topics do you consider in your lyrics?.
O:
Our lyrics are written with a positive outlook in mind. They are actually all quite personal; based around the f&*ked up things that have happened in our lives and trying to express our anger about it (hence the name OUTRAGE). We do have a newer song that we have just finished writing that has somewhat broken that rule. It is based on a small part of a well known horror film. We do try to take issues that have come up and try to use the negative part of it to open up a new view of it. For example, our song, "The 2 Sides Of Denial" is about people who are in denial of the pain and suffering that they int1ict on others. We try to graphically explain the pain that is felt. Domestic violence and abandonment of children are perfect examples. We're trying to say, don't you see what you're doing?

DT: What do you think of those who say that "girls can't play".
O:
Ha ha ha. Well, let's forget about the fact that there are women in the band. If we were all guys, it would be bad enough to see all of the lame, simplistic bands that talk a great deal about how hard it is to play their songs and what hard work it is to go up there and play in front of people when what you are playing is mind boggling compared to some of what's out there. Now, picture being a woman, who is alienated from the style of music she wants to play simply because of her sex. She is critiqued even more because she is watched closer to see if she can fit in. She gets ignored and "brushed off" because she's "not one of the guys". And all of this negative attention from people who don't try as hard as the women of OUTRAGE do JUST TO BE NOTICED. Do you know what it's like to have someone else tell you that you can't do something just because you're a woman? To answer your question, only a man would have that reaction and that man would be a pretty lame idiot. They can rot in hell. I hope that answers your question.

DT:
Your fave bands?
O:
Which one of us? We all have different favorites. Here, let's do it this way: Kurt - No real favorite, but let's start with SLAYER, TESTAMENT, SUFFOCATION, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, D.B.C., MORBID ANGEL, SEPULTURA, and on and on and on. Believe me the list doesn't stop there.
Tracy - PANTERA, SLAYER, TESTAMENT, old METALLICA, MACHINE HEAD, ANTHRAX, OZZY, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE,
Ari - PANTERA, old METALLICA, SLAYER, TESTAMENT.
Liz - SLAYER, old METALLICA, MACHINE HEAD, PANTERA ANTHRAX, RUSH, OZZY, SEPULTURA, etc.

DT:
Do you like ANTHRAX, METALLICA, EXODUS, TESTAMENT & OVERKILL?
O:
I think we're all fans of ANTHRAX, METALLICA, EXODUS, and TESTAMENT METALLICA, EXODUS and TESTAMENT are all from the Bay Area here. They are all part of our metal heritage if your will. I am the only fan of OVERKILL. But nothing past Horrorscope. We saw ANTHRAX and PANTERA last year in San Francisco. That was quite the killer show besides the fact that Phil from PANTERA was so drunk he couldn't sing in key. The last METALLICA show was several years ago with SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and CANDLEBOX who ended up getting booed off the stage. I saw OVERKILL at the Stope in San Francisco during their Horrorscope tour .

DT:
How was your first gig (I guess it was at the Magnolia´s)?.
O:
Well, it kinda sucked actually. Tracy's guitar was having bad problems right before we went on, so sbe had to use her back up which was not really much better. Our drummer got lost repeatedly and we couldn't hear each other very well. Besides that, the energy was great and there was a great torn out. We did our best given the circumstances, and no one really noticed the problems. Or at least that's what they say. In that perspective, I guess it wasn't too terrible.

DT: What do you think about PANTERA, KORN & DEFTONES.
O:
We're all fans of PANTERA and have seen them many times as I've stated before. However, we just saw Ozzfest a couple weeks ago at the Shoreline Amphitheater. That was the first time Tracy and I had heard DEFTONES. They were really pretty cool. I'm not too particularly fond of KORN. Tracy likes KORN.

DT:
Your musical productions? (include rehearsals, demos, etc... ).
O:
Well, we rehearse twice a week, three times if we have a show coming up for up to 4 to 5 hours at a time. Tracy and Ari recorded a 3 song demo with a drum machine under PLANE JANE. That demo was primarily for finding other band members. Later, after OUTRAGE was fully formed, they released a 7-song demo titled, "...just a demo" in 1997. Now, OUTRAGE is working on playing plenty of shows throughout the summer with plans of going into the studio in the winter to record a new demo. Tracy will be heard as a guest guitarist on SKITZO's new album, "Got Sick" in the track, "Class Dismembered". I am co-producing this album. Jim Martin from FAITH NO MORE and STEVE SMITHE from VICIOUS RUMORS will also be on the album.

DT:
Do you know any South American bands?.
O:
SEPULTURA, but I would imagine that's a pretty generic answer to you by now. Ah yes, BRUJERIA. I forgot about them, out I'm not quite sure where they're from.

DT:
What do you think of the Glam Metal bands from the late 80's?.
O:
I'll let Tracy, Ari, and Liz answer to this one. I'm not to particularly fond of any of it. Ari thinks they are a memory to look back on should not be brought back. Tracy liked them a lot in the 80´s and still likes to listen to it once in a while. Liz liked it back then but is not into it anymore.

DT:
How many gigs, concerts, tours, have you played... Did you ever play in other places besides Europe & U.S.A. ?.
O:
We have yet to venture outside of the Bay Area. We do plan to start expanding a bit in the near future. We hope to be doing some shows here pretty soon in San Francisco. We have a few other shows that are in the works. But no real definite dates. As far as a number of shows we've played, we haven't really kept count. I'd say we played somewhere close to 20 shows. Our last 4 were with our new drummer Liz.

DT: Which was the best audience you ever play for?.
O:
I think we all agree with our show last June at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA was the ultimate best. We opened for SKITZO and SWEET LEAF. SKITZO (in case you haven't heard of them) is the band whose singer/bass player, Lance, pukes green on stage. SWEET LEAF is his OZZY / BLACK SABBATH tribute band. It was a great crowd. We sounded our best. And we got a good response. It was our first show with Liz and we introduced 3 new songs. The audience seemed to like them. Who could ask for more?

DT:
Do you like American Pit Bulls Terrier?.
O:
Hey now, I thought this was a musically influenced interview. Uh, I never met one I like. You kinda caught me off guard there. Uh, how do you want me to respond to that one? I guess they're all right if people didn't train them to kill. Maybe we should write a song about that... just kidding.

DT:
What do you think of the Southern California Hardcore Punk Movement?.
O:
I can't say we're really into punk at all. It's alright We will however say, we would support the bands if they were in our area. We support local bands. That pretty much explains it all. Local bands and the fans of local bands in our area call it "Tribe Of Force" or "T.O.F". That would be those of us who support the local scene. There are a few really good punk bands around here. And we are all T.O.F. There have been huge, all-day T.O.F. parties with a dozen or more bands. We all must support each other if we wish to be supported ourselves. Punk, maybe not, but they deserve to be up there just as much as we do. I hope it continues to move forward.

DT:
Are you into drugs?.
O:
I wouldn't say INTO drugs. We like to drink mostly. Maybe get stoned once in a while. But definately, I think alcohol is the drug of choice. It's CHEAPER!

DT:
Your best album?.
O:
"...Just a demo", definately. The PLANE JANE Demo was never a complete project It had no vocals or leads or even a drummer for that matter as I mentioned earlier about the drum machine.

DT:
Have you ever consider playing in this part of the world? (I mean South America).
O:
Of course. As soon as we get signed and a tour is in our budget.

DT:
Your last comment for DT. Readers... where can they find your stuff?.
O:
All of our information can be found on our website at http://members.aol.com/OUTRAG3411. Don't forget to check out some of the bands on our links page. Many of them are bands from our area. They are all worth checking out. The site is updated regularly and there's almost always something new on it. Do everything you can to help keep the scene in your area alive. Show the world we have the power to overcome the obstacles set before us. Keep it live. Keep it real. Support your local scene. We're all in this together.
