There is decent birding at Lake Van Norden. You can either take the road at the end of the parking lot across the street down across the railroad 0.6 mi. to Old Donner Summit Rd. (a gravel road) or drive down to the blinking light and take Soda Springs Rd. turning into the parking area just across the railroad and continuing down the dirt road 3/4 mi. or so.
Blue Grouse, Black-backed Woodpecker, Osprey, White Pelicans and many other high-elevation birds can be seen there and in the Serene Lakes (Ice Lakes) area a little further down Soda Springs Rd.
The no trespassing signs are to keep cross country skiers, who didn't pay, out of Royal Gorges ski trials.
