12 Reasons for Mental Illness Relapse

1. Stops taking prescribed medication, whether due to denial, due to believing, “I’m cured because I’m feeling good now,” or due to uncomfortable medication side effects.

2. Uses alcohol or other drugs

3. Doesn’t communicate with doctor or other treatment staff

4. Negative use of time.

5. Poor health practices.

6. Unable to resolve bad feelings (example: anxiety, nervousness, voices, visions, depression).

7. Poor coping skills. Can’t deal with anger, stress, problem-solving.

8. No self-restraint.  Doesn’t set necessary limits on personal behavior.

9. Doesn’t use the available community resources.

10. Hasn’t experienced trauma and pain from not following treatment.

11. Lacks self-confidence.  Poor self-esteem.  No positive goals. (--Has never had accomplishments)

12. No insight. Poor judgment in making decisions, especially decisions about family, housing, and money.
