I was diagnosed with ADD when I was about 3 1/2, my Mom knew there was something that seemed more wild than the norm in me,
She said that I wasn't the typical toddler, I was a permanently wound up wild man hehe, I'd rather take apart something than play with my toys hehe. The Dr's and therapists said I couldn't be tested until I was 5 years old, some even said 6.
The therapist did a couple tests and agreed that, I had a problem but couldn't do anything about it.
When I started school at 4 the teacher didn't have too many problems with me just that I didn't pay attention.
It was Head Start so it didn't count toward my school career. My kindergarten teacher had the same complaint and I was absent a lot because the dr said I had pneumonia that we found out was probably Asthma all along.
In spite of this I still got good grades and passed, on to first grade. I had a teacher I liked a lot who let me go at my pace, and wander (Wade means Wanderer) around the room when I needed to, I got A's, B's and a C here and there.
Than Mom found a house for us, so we could move out of our apartment, but that meant going to a new school.
I started at the new school and I was lucky, my new teacher was friends with my old teacher. So things weren't all that different just the kids, and teacher. I continued to get pretty good grades B's and C's.
Then I started second grade, this teacher was different, she had a son who had ADD and she thought I needed medicine to help me out.
Mom took me to the dr and I was put on Ritalin, I remembered to put my name on my papers, directions for my assignments and my grades went up a little A's and B's again.
I continued on the Ritalin in third grade until we had to shuffle Dr's and I had to see a pdoc, she changed my med to Dextrostat, I started having trouble sleeping so Mom quit giving me my 4:00p.m. dose.
The Dr. agreed with that, I was on A',B' Honor Roll last year and I got a certificate and a picture of me in an Indy Car for it.
In fourth grade and still on Dextrostat and my first report card looked pretty good and I can stay on task when I take my medicine.
Mom wishes there was something I could take to make my desk and locker cleaner but, hey, that's just me being me *g*
Fifth Grade, No meds this year have trouble staying on task and HATE homework. Grades are ok, B's and C's. I get whiny when I get bored and I really wish my dad was here to help me with my homework a lot of the time. Mom doesn't have quite enough patience to help me and neither does my Granny. They say I have to learn to do the work on my own...
