Tips and Suggestions |
Take a look across this land. You see rolling hills, an ocean, forests, mountains, caves, a lake, a racetrack (right below the town square), and Flower Bud Village. The world Harvest Moon 64 encompasses is enormous. Traveling to different places and finding secrets scattered throughout the land in your free time is half the fun of the game. In fact, you'll find yourself hurrying to be done your chores so you can go out adventuring! In order to be a successful farmer, you'll need to strike out to distant areas of the world. You can travel to the Green Ranch to buy livestock, scout for unusual herbs in the forests, and even mine valuable ores and minerals in the mountains to pad your purse in the slower seasons. |

On an open field, just a short hike from your farm, lies a place called the Green Ranch. Run by a fiery-haired scotsman, this rival farm deals not in crops (lucky for you), but in livestock. The farm itself is a sprawling encampment, featuring stable hands, animals, a lovely young lady by the name of Ann (See The Town section), and her bratty brother. Business is conducted in a building near the entrance, where you can purchase cow, sheep, and chickens to expand the herd at your own farm. Also available for sale is chicken, cow, and sheep feed, for use if you run out of cut grass. The "cow potion" is used for impregnating your cows, so they can have babies. Natural born cows are cheaper, and give better milk, but they take longer to mature. The first time you set foot on this farm, the kind owner gifts you with a young horse. |

Deep in the nearby woods, you can seek out the Vineyard. These series of fields are home to Karen (see The Town section), her family, and a bunch of workers. The people there labor to grow and ferment the berries that produce much of the beverages for sale in Flower Bud Village. (Note: Because of the alcohol present in the game, Nintendo has to put a warning label on the back of every Harvest Moon 64 box that says "Use of Alcohol"). The vineyard isn't a place of business, but rather a chance to socialize and relax with some friends. It also serves as a place for special events, later on in the game. |

After your chores are done at your farm, and you're still itching for a little extra money, you can search through the woods for berries, herbs, and nuts. These vegitative delicacies can be sold through your own shipping box for some extra money. They're scattered high and low, some on the edge of forests, some deep within the trees. Also, as the seasons pass, new plants grow in the wild, while old ones die away. You might find yourself heading into the forests often with an axe. By slicing up stumps, you can gather wood. Then, on your farm, you can use that wood to create fences, or invest it in improving your house. |

At the base of the mountains lies a well-built, simple cabin. In this cottage lies a crew of friendly carpenters with the expertise and know-how to improve your home. By visiting these folks and providing them with money and wood, you can contract the carpenters to enlarge your house, build new rooms, or even construct a greenhouse! But these folk aren't static characters; from time to time, they'll take on projects of their own initiative. If you help them when they need a hand in repairing a bridge, give them a hand. They will make it worth your while. |
